Alternations Concern

Ladies,

I need some advice.  My wedding is in July, and I went dress shopping back in in October.  I went early just in case it took a while to find it, or I needed to order it.  Luckly, neither came true.  The first day of looking for a dress I found one, and the sample was for sale and in PERFECT condition.  So for the reduced price, the dress came home with me that day.  It was big then.  I have been losing weight, and plan on losing more prior to the wedding.  I am stressed/nervous about whether or not the place does my alterations is going to be able to take it in enough that it still looks good and works.  Has anyone else had this experience?  Know how many sizes they are able to take it in?

  • I believe a really good seamstress could work with you, even if it needs more than just to be taken in by 2 sizes.  At the very least, make an appointment and bring it to ask her.  Good luck!
  • It really depends on the style of the dress, and where you are losing your weight. For example, if your dress is an a-line, and you are losing most of your weight in your hips and thighs, it won't be a big deal. If your dress is a fit & flare, and you are losing all of your weight in your torso, it could be a bigger issue.

Most dresses can be taken in 2 sizes without losing construction on the dress.  Most dresses can be reconstructed for more than 2 sizes, but you are talking major alterations, and it can get VERY expensive. I have heard of brides paying more than the cost of their dress in alterations when they have to have the dress basically, reconstructed.  Also, if you have to go that route, make sure you go to a seamstress that has a lot of experience.  They will likely have to recreate the bust and move boning around.   that isn't as simple as taking it in.
