Wedding Guest Attire Help Needed ASAP!

I'm going to a wedding today, and haven't figured out what to wear! The bride said the groomsmen were all wearing a tux, and I've gathered from that info that the wedding may be semi-formal. The invitation does not give specifics as to the attire requested of the guests.
One suggestion I was given was to wear an old bridesmaid dress I have. It's navy, knee-length, strapless with just a hit of sparkle on the bust area (a few sparkles in the center, nothing outrageous, very subtle) - I'm wondering if that would be appropriate to wear? The ceremony is late in the afternoon and reception in the evening. The dress is a muted fabric with a sheer overlay that goes to just below my knee, so not shiny at all. Is this appropriate to wear to a wedding? Also - can I pair a black sweater with it (since it's December, and I don't want to go completely sleeveless! Especially in the church!). Any help would be appreciated!!!
Thanks!

  • I would say that would be good.  Nothing more dressy than that though.  I've been to a lot of weddings where all the bridal party was in formal attire but the average guest wore a nice pants suit, a dress, or a skirt/top combo.  Have a great time at the wedding!!!
  • I think that sounds fine for a late afternoon/evening semi-formal wedding, especially if you have some kid of wrap or sweater.   The only caveat would be that if there is any navy blue on the invitations, the bride might be using navy as one of her colors, and her bridesmaids might also be in navy dresses -- or possibly even the same dress if it's by a popular designer.   That would be awkward....

I've never used the invitation colour to determine what I shouldn't wear... the likelihood of them having the same dress is slim, especially since designers change their styles every season/year.

I think your navy dress/sweater combination sounds great.
  • The navy dress and black sweater sound like a good choice to me.

  • Thank you all so much for your help!!! My outfit was the perfect mix of semi-formal and a bit of casual with the sweater, so I fit right in with the other guests! Even added a little pop of color with the heels :) I really appreciate all the advice!!Laughing
