I could cry

So . . . my venue includes a three tier cake from Jacques Pastries in suncook.  Score right?  well it's not.

So after looking at everything on the site and in magazines, I finally found a cake that is perfect for us.  It is from Martha Stewart Weddings, and is not, in my opinion, that ornate.  See picture.  So they tell me that this cake would be an upgrade and would cost an additional $800-1000!

Is it me, or is this insane?  It will seriously break my heart if I can't have this cake I'm so in love with it.  But I cannot fathom spending that much!

Can you ask for a credit or alternative for the Jaques cake and look into having your cake made from another bakery? I'd really try Shara from Chickadee Hill Cakes, her prices are AMAZING! and her cake is the best I've ever had. We've used her on 3 different occassions including our wedding. Good luck!

Wow - I had a cake included from Jacques with my wedding package. I chose a cake that was different than the cake that the venue had featured as the cake that went with my package. Were there only "certain" cakes you were allowed to pick from for your venue? The cake you love does look very intricate by that is a HUGE amount of $ to spend to upgrade.

I agree that seems like a very large number for an upgrade.  Could you see if they could do something similar that would not cost extra?  I also think Gabs point is a good one: were there only certain cakes you could choose from?  Talking to your venue proably couldn't hurt either.

I will be calling them tomorrow to set up an appointment to see how we can do something similar.  I just nearly died when I saw the number they were asking.  It is just insane that any cake would cost that money!  It isn't like I was asking for a 10 foot pumpkin carriage . . . .

I would ask them if there is something they could do to make it look similar without costing that much additional. I gave them a photo of a cake I loved and instead of paying to have them match it exactly we tweaked a few things and had them do their typical swirl pattern, etc and it still looked like the picture I brought in, but was mine instead of just a copy cat. They are great people (I've gone back multiple times for other cakes) and they are willing to work with people. GL!

I think because it is a octagon cake hikes the price up a lot. Even having a square cake costs more than a round cake. You should ask if they can do a smaller version and have a sheet cake to serve what your presentation cake doesn't serve.

I agree with FireDancer. The shape of the cake adds to the cost.

To be honest, I think the cost comes from the orange (? I can't tell from the picture) decoration part. It  looks fairly difficult to make (cut outs?), and with Jacques, I'm not surprised at the cost. How many people are you having? They may have made that estimate based on your numbers as well.

Could you ask for the same design but on a circle cake? Or is it the shape that attracts you?  FI originally wanted a square cake, but they are a price upgrade, I can only imagine other shapes are even more.

Fi convinced me that I shouldn't get too upset yet and that we need to sit down with them and see what drives the cost up and how we can get the cost down.  I wouldn't mind a round cake at all.  Thank you for all the suggestions.  We are considering reducing the size of the cake and serving sheet cake from the back too!

    I'll keep you updated!
