Modernize Moms dress?

Hey girls!  I am toying with the idea of wearing my moms wedding dress.  Its a classic Chiffon empire gown circa 1980.  I would want to change the straight across top (make into a V neck), remove the train (use it to add more length as its two inches to short).  As well as change the straps.

The dress has not yellowed.  And is in great shape.  Does anyone have experiance with these type of gown alterations?  Is it very expensive?  Has anyone used there moms gown?

Thanks ladies, any tips would be great!

  • I have never dealt with that personally. Since it sounds like it has been preserved well, you should be able to take it in and consult with some seamstresses that specialize in altering wedding gowns. I would definitely check out some places and get prices before you decide who to choose. And then they will guide you from there, get your measurements, etc. It may take several appt's if there is a lot that needs to be done.
  • If you do bring it into a seamstress, make sure you see examples of thier previous work so you know that they could do soemthing like what you are looking for.
  • I'm toying with the same idea for my grandma's gown, and have been trying to find pics online of before and afters for inspiration.  Has anyone come across some great restyles?
