Hairstyle for a Sweetheart cut Strapless Dress?

Any ideas how to wear my hair when I have a sweetheart cut, strapless dress? My sisters keep saying to put it in a bun, but I rarely wear it that way normally- I don't want to look like a stranger in pictures. I'm afraid even with a necklace it will be too bare, but I want to show off my beading on the upper half of the dress too. Thanks!

  • Wow, there are so many options...a half up-half down style would show off the front of your gown, but still leave a lot of movement in your hairstyle. A low pony or side pony would be a little more pulled back, but still informal. Or you could do a loose, romantic updo. I really love Lauren Conrad's style from the VMA's a couple of years ago:

Anyway, if you want to flip through some inspiration photos for more ideas, I really like projectwedding.com. They have thousands of hair photos!
  • I think your options are endless!  I don't know that a hairstyle for a sweetheart would differ from the hairstyle for any strapless dress (or any dress in general).  Ditto what Opal said, and I also like that hairstyle that LC wore.  I think something romantic and swept off your face (doesn't have to be totally up) would be great!

  • I am wearing mine as much down as possible because I don't like the way I look with my hair pulled back.  I am hoping my stylist can tease it enough so that my veil will stay in without having to put any of it back.  I am also wearing a sweatheart strapless!

I love the half-up look.  I will be wearing a strapless dress also and I feel it just adds to the elegance of the dress.

  • I have a sweetheart neckline, romantic updo, large earrings, no necklace. I never like being on display, as in show off my neck & collar bones, but for this day, I'm showing it all. This is the one day anything goes. Try out some different styles. I'm going for the long neck, classy look. (But also, I have very thin, fine hair, it would do nothing for me to wear it down, or partially up.)
  • I'm wearing a similar style dress and I'm wearing my hair up and 'princessy' with curls. Anything you want will look great-- wearing it up with accentuate your neckline and maybe look taller-- very Audrey Hepburn

  • I think the key, regardless of dress style is to go to a salon and try a few styles to see which one makes you feel the most elegant and lovely wile still being YOU. Take a few photos you like with you. You'll find it! It's easy for us to say wear it up, or half up half down, etc...

I for example look nice with my hair all up, but the half-up style does not suit me at all. You have to see what works best for you! :)
  • Thanks everybody! That has been a lot of help. I love that one style of LC too!
  • Megoguen - how did you end up doing your hair? I don't normally wear necklaces, I'm a fan of large earrings and I have thin hair. I'm curious about a good, casual up do for my beach wedding that won't look flat by the end of the evening.
  • I wore my hair up with my sweetheart one shoulder dress.

When it comes to hair I think the shape of your face should be the primary consideration when choosing your hairstyle and then the formality of your gown.  If you are wearing an informal wedding dress then something a bit looser and down would be appropriate.  If your dress is super formal then an updo would be more appropriate.

  • I like the half up style with a sweetheart neckline.
