HELP! Shoe color trouble....

My dress is ivory and my wedding colors are black/ivory with red as an accent color. I want to wear black shoes with my dress instead of ivory ones, but my future mother-in-law insists that black shoes are not going to look good and has even told the grooms aunt (who is the Matron of Honor) that I'm wearing ivory shoes. Is she right, will black shoes be the wrong choice? Or should I stick to my guns and get the shoes I really want?

Re: HELP! Shoe color trouble....

  • If you are doing red as an accent color wear red shoes! I love when brides wear colored shoes. I will be wearing teal shoes for mine.

  • I'm not a fan, but do what you want in that regard. If you're nervous that she's right, try on the dress with black and ivory shoes and see if it looks like you think it will. I know a lot of mothers (cough mine cough) who dislike the idea of colored shoes, so if it's what you really want, stick to your guns.

Thanks ladies! I really appreciate the advice.
  • I think black or red shoes would look awesome!   I considered black shoes because then I'd definitely be able to wear them again....I settled on teal though, because they're awesome and just make me really happy, and I like the idea of wearing something on my feet that I love :-)

  • The shoes you wear are none of your FMIL's business.  I think the black shoes will be fine.  Very few people will see them anyway.
  • My FMIL and I were watching the Oscars last year and she was shocked to see Nicole Kidman wearing a long white dress with red shoes. "Red shoes with a white dress!?!" She thought it was so ugly. I told her about how it's a big trend right now for girls to wear colourful shoes under their wedding dress for a fun splash of colour, and how usually you don't really see it but they can lift up their dress for fun photos and she said "REALLY!?!" and was really put off by the whole idea. She also said that she thought it looked "stupid" when the actresses had dresses that were so long that they needed to lift them when they walked.

Personally, I was surprised to hear her complain about this. I'm sure she's not going to like or understand all of my fashion choices for my wedding day. She has a really good sense of style, but she's a different generation than I am and doesn't see things the same way that I do. You should wear what you really want to wear on your wedding day. You can never please everyone but that's okay. Remember that this is your chance to make these choices for yourself and she already had a day that she got to choose her bridal shoes. Now it's your turn.
  • I'm a big fan of colored shoes under wedding dresses. However, I went to a bridal show yesterday where one of the brides wore black shoes, and I personally didn't care for it. I LOVED the girl with the teal shoes, though.
