Opinion - Ivory dress with a beige/tan suit

We are having an outdoor, very informal wedding and my FI doesn't want to wear a black tux. I totally agree with him. It's at the end of summer and he'd boil, but also it just doesn't fit with what we want our wedding to be like. He initially wanted grey, but next to my ivory dress, it just didn't look right.

Cut to the tux shop where my mom and bridesmaid are trying to scope out some tuxes. FI any I live in another city so couldn't go with them. Mother is bouncing from black to charcoal to navy blue, all colours I'd already said weren't right for us. I said to her, can she look at some in beige, tan or other summery neutrals, preferably in a linen? Now she is acting like I insulted the ones she liked. Can anyone back me up on a light coloured suit looking good with an ivory dress? I've found a couple of pictures, but it's so hard to tell on a computer screen. Ivory dress brides, what are your men wearing? Our bridesmaids' dresses are plum purple.

Re: Opinion - Ivory dress with a beige/tan suit

  • My dress wasn't ivory, but at weddings I've attended where the bride wore ivory, I think her groom was in a black tux, ivory shirt. However, as you said, you don't want black, which I think is totally fine.

Were you think beige suit, ivory shirt? Sort of like this (except maybe no vest)

I think that would be fine. What color would the GMs suits be? Beige also? I think if FI is in beige, it would look odd to have them in gray or black, so I'd stick with the same color.

  • I think that would look great. I'm wearing an ivory dress and the men in my wedding are wearing gray, but our colors are yellow and gray...

I still think they would look good. Are there no bridal salons or tux stores in your area? If you already have your dress or have it on order you can usually get a swatch of your dress to compare to tuxes..
  • Try this:
Everyone wears a beige/light tan suit. The groom wears an ivory vest and tie with a white shirt (so that there's contrast) and the other guys in the wedding wear a Champagne colored vest and tie? I say, "vest and tie" because the outfit lacks when the jacket comes off if there's no vest, IMO.

Regarding the fabric, though -- I'm pretty sure that linen isn't available for rental - or raw silk. Those fabrics would be too delicate for renting (I've heard that the big rental companies will rent one garment at least 60 times!).

So --- for tan suits -- It looks like some of the big companies don't rent suits at all! So you may have to go with a for-purchase suit.

  • I'm a little late on this, but I'm having a destination wedding and my dress is ivory.  My FI is wearing a light tan seersucker suit with a white shirt and the GM are wearing linen pants and white linen shirts.

I think a tan suit would look nice with the Ivory.
