Dress Size help!

I tried on my dress in the store in a size 14. It was too tight, for sure, but I like the way that it hugged my body.  At that point I would have ordered a 16 to be safe. It is now 2 months later and I am 6 pounds lighter and going for more. My wedding is not for a year and a half. I want to order the dress before the price goes up because it is a 2008 style, but I don't know which size I should go with. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated!

Re: Dress Size help!

  • Keep in mind that samples are often stretched out from being tried on so many times. If you were measured today, what size does that put you in? I would get that size, and have the dress taken in if need be. You don't want to order a dress that is too small and then not be able to fit into it.

I'd find out how much the dress could potentially be taken in if you do buy the size you are today.

  • I would wait to buy a dress until you are 8-9 months out from the wedding. This is especially true if you plan on losing more weight. Most seamstresses can take in a dress at least 2 sizes.

  • Buy the dress and have it taken in. The cost of alterations will be significantly less than having to buy a more expensive dress. Good Luck!

This is a great point. I've seen more than a few brides burned by trusting the size of the sample. They can really stretch A LOT from being tried on dozens and dozens of times. Especially if your dress was a 2008, the sample may have been around since late 2007. Get measured at the store and ask them for advice. I think it's ok to order your dress early (I ordered my dress 13 months out- but I've been the exact same weight since I was 16). If you think your wait will change considerably, I would wait until 8 -10 months out
