How much of my body will the consultant be seeing?

I'm kinda nervous about dress shopping because I'm very modest (or maybe just self conscious) and not a fan of other people seeing me nude..

Just curious what your experience was and what to expect so I can mentally prepare myself a bit before I go haha.

Thanks :)

  • You generally get a room to change in.. they may ask if you need assistance getting into your dress or undergarments (like a bra or slip), but you don't get full on naked so no worries about them seeing you nude. :)
  • Thank you for posting this I was wondering the same thing. I'm going this weekend to try a sample dress on that I fell in love with and may purchase.

  • I wore regular underwear and a strapless bra. The salon had a large changing room with a curtain. I stepped into the dress and then the consultant came into the room and did up the back of the dress.

Good luck! I hope you find "the one" :D
  • I wore a strapless bra and my spanx. Most dresses I stepped into myself and then the consultant did them up. The other dresses required a hoop and so I put the hoop on then the consultant helped me put the dress on over my head. I never felt uncomfortable through my whole experience.

  • both salons i went to, the consultant stayed in the room as i undressed and then helped me into each gown.

Actually, I went to Kleinfelds and the girl was super nice and cute and was so helpful with all the dresses... and my mom and best friend were in the room, too. And even after I picked my dress, the consultant, another "measuring" woman, and the designer of the dress came into the room to measure me.  I was wearing the dress at some points, but at others, I was only wearing my undergarments.

This is funny... at one point I knew I wasn't going to be able to pull one of the dresses over my butt, but she made me try anyways (if it doesn't fit going up, they put it over your head to pull down).  So, I had the dress literally up my legs up to the bottom of my large butt and couldn't pull it up anymore.  She made me turn around so my butt was facing all three of them and jump up and down to try and force it over!  I'm sure it wasn't a cute sight!!!

I do have to say that I'm not a tiny girl... and was nervous about it... but after the initial taking my clothes off, I kinda got used to it.  I would wear full bottomed underwear (even boy shorts) and a strapless bra.  OR get one of those nude tank tops that you can buy in the undergarment section of most stores.  Good luck!!!

I think it depends. When I went to David's Bridal, they stuck me in a closet sized room & had me get into the dress by myself (not easy). When I went to the salon I found my dress at, the consultant helped me get in & out of them. Like PP said, wear full coverage bottoms and perhaps a tank on the top. Then once the dress is on, you can take off the tank and you won't be seen by others. You'll see that it's not as weird as you think it is. They do this all day!
  • I wore full  bum panties and a strapless bra, they tell you to get in the dress then they come in in zip/lace and put all the clips on, for the most part all they see is your back and bum
    hope that helps
  • Even if you do go into a store where they normally help you in and out of the dresses, I'm sure you won't have been the first person to ask that you get into it yourself and have them just help fasten you up.  Remember, they are trying to sell you something, so they'll definitely work with your comfort level, you just need to speak up.

    Good luck dress shopping!

  • I'm another one that went the Spanx/girdle and a strapless full coverage bra route. The consultants did leave me alone to put on the crinolines, but they helped me into and out of the dresses, and I needed it, some of those things are difficult to get in and out of alone. I will say that you need to get used to the fact that your back, and probably your bra might be showing when you turn around. I tried on several dresses in my size, but also several that were a bit too small for me because that's the only sample size they had. It fit in the front, but I was totally walking out into Alfred Angelo knowing that my back/bra were showing to whoever was behind me. I'd hate to have given up trying on those dresses just because I couldn't do up the back.

  • When I went to David's Bridal they had me put on a strapless bra and a slip. At one location I put the dresses on myself (Not easy I had to ask at one point how I was suppose to do it) at the other location where I found my dress, my consultant waited til I had the slip and bra on and she came in each time to help me into the dress. The only visible skin were my shoulders.
