Found My Dress! And some questions.

I found my dress!  I went to David's Bridal with my mom to start getting ideas for dresses.  I didn't even have an appointment, but they had a spot open, so I decided to go ahead and try some on.  I already knew going into it that I wanted a 1950's vintage style dress with lace, and did not want it to be long with any kind of train.  Well, the second dress I tried on was perfect!  I kept trying on other dresses, but I just kept comparing every dress back to the one I loved.  I was a little nervous going ahead and buying the dress since it was the very first place I looked, but I just thought I would keep comparing every dress to this one and would end up going back for it anyway.

Originally we were planning on getting married in November of this year, but have since decided to push it back to March 2014 to give us more time to save money.  So, now I have my dress a whole year before my wedding!  Will it be okay in the garment bag for a year?  How should I store it?

I'm going to wait until closer to the wedding to have it altered, but I do have a question.  I will have to have the shoulders taken up and some other alterations to make it fit my short torso, but should I have it hemmed? The dress is meant to be tea-length, but comes down to just above my feet.  (I'm only 4'11").  I actually like the length that it is on me though. My question though, is does it look like it's too long or too short? I mean, does it look like it is supposed to be tea-length and is too long, or does it look too short because it doesn't brush the ground?  I really want to leave it the length it is, but don't want it to look weird.

  • prettty!! I would wait to alter it completely.. but I think it should be shortend to make it look like a true tea length, because it looks alittle long on you. But I really like it alot!
  • This is adorable! Congrats on finding your dress so quickly and unexpectedly!

I would say have it shortened to a true tea length. Right now it just looks like a long dress that is a little short on you. Otherwise, perfect!

  • Love it!!!!

I agree with the other people, it should be shortened to a true tea-length.  I would also look into petticoats before having fittings, and get one for a tea-length gown.  Then, if you need that also shortened, they can do them both for you so them fit together properly - and having the petticoat underneath will change the hem-line and make it fit differently, which you want to have the seamstress see BEFORE it is hemmed.  Same logic as wearing the heel height you plan to wear for a fitting.  Have you thought of having a fun colored petticoat?  It could be one you switch into for the reception (white for the ceremony, colored for the reception).  I think you should consider a petticoat in a color or colors to coordinate with your wedding colors, flowers, whathaveyou.  Etsy has several vendors who do custom petticoats (you can even select a mix of colors, such as black, silver and lilac.) So, for example, you could have an emerald green petticoat and emerald green satin pumps.  Then, for the reception, put those guys on and change out of the wedding version. In any case, it's lovely!  Congratulations!
  • It looks great, It does however look a bit short on you.
  • Thanks ladies. I will get it hemmed to tea length. I hadn't even thought of wearing a petticoat! That's definitely an idea!
  • I had the same issue with my tea-length dress. I was hesitant to have mine shortened, but I am so glad I did.

I think it will be okay in the garment bag, as long as you keep in in a dark dry place, but I'm not sure.

  • I found my dress unexpectedly as well and the place I bought it at said that it will be fine in the garment bag, as long as its not in plastic.  They also told me that every couple of months I could unzip the garment bag, but to keep it out of the light, and just to freshen it up a bit, but I don't need to do it.

I also agree with everyone else, I would hem it to a tea-style.  BTW the dress is gorgeous and congrats on the find!!

  • I have to pick it up withn a week, so I'll store it in the closet of the guest room. No one ever goes in there, so it will stay dry and dark. I'll just have to keep my FI away from it! I definitely have time before I will need to take it in for an alteration fitting, so I can decide if I want a petticoat and which shoes. Thanks!
