My measurements are 3 different sizes... help!

Last night I was looking at dresses online, and I found one on David Bridal's site that I really, really like. However, it's available for order online only, and they don't sell it in stores. It's also on sale for $150 right now which is crazy! The sale goes until the 18th. I'm thinking about ordering the dress because I'm only going to be out on the $15 shipping fee if I'd need to return it.

Anyway, the problem is I have no idea what size to order. DB has a sizing guide on their site and based on the guide, each of my measurements is a completely different size! My bust is a size 2, my waist is below 0 and my hips are between a 4 and a 6. The sizing guide is below if that would help any... If I do order the dress, I don't know whether to get the size 2 or the size 4.... I'll likely loose another inch from my waist and hips within the next month or so now that I'm not sustaining myself on Christmas fudge and cookies. LOL!

I also know that no matter what dress I end up with I'll need to have it altered, but I don't know what size would be best for the alterations...or even if I should order it at all since my measurements are so odd.

Any advice would be very much appreciated. :)

  • It's always easier to alter down a size than up.

If I were you, I'd probably order a 4. The shape is a slim A-line, so there is a LITTLE give in the hips, but not a whole lot (compared to, say, a ballgown).

Generally I don't think it's a good idea to buy a dress you haven't tried on.. but then again, it is only $150, and returnable (?). So.. you don't really have that much to lose.

mine are 2 different sizes, my bust and waist are both a 4, and my hips are an 8. I ordered a 10 in my dress. big effing deal. you always go with the largest size, and get everything else taken in to fit. don't depend on losing weight, that's a bad plan. order the 6 and remember that size is just an arbitrary number. what matters is how you look, and you won't look good if your dress is straining at the hips because you ordered a size too small.

btw, I've ordered from DB Online before. you better be DAMN SURE you like that dress immediately when you put it on, because you only get 14 days to return it. they will not accept the dress after 14 days. believe me, I've begged and tried and now I'm a two-dress bride.

  • They generally say to get the size that fits the biggest part of your body, because it's easier to have it taken in than let out. However, I have known people that have followed this and ended up with a gigantic dress that doesn't really fit them anywhere.

Do you have a David's Bridal nearby? Because you could probably go in and try on a similar dress, I would imagine the sizing would be very similar since they are all the same brand. The people there should be able to help, too.

Also, in case it matters, in my experience wedding/bridesmaid dresses run a little small, so don't be suprised if you end up with a size larger than your normally wear. I'm normally a 4-6 and ordered a size 8, but the dress fits perfectly (aside from it being a little large in the bust...story of my life!)

nope and nope. first of all, all the DB dresses are not the same brand. there is DB, Oleg Cassini, and Galina. 3 different brands. second of all, I used this method to "try on" the dress I wanted because there was no sample in the store. I tried on 4 different dresses, all the same brand and style as mine, and 4 was the size I needed for all of them. so I had the store order a 4. TOO DAMN TIGHT! wouldn't even zipped up all the way. we were wary of ordering a 6, so I needed an 8. ended up ordering a 10 since the dress was discontinued and there were no more 8s left in the company warehouse. it looks like a tent on me NOW, but in the hands of my uber-talented seamstress, it won't when she is done with it.

  • Do you have a DB near you?  You can try on a similar style dress there and figure out what size you'll need.

  • Now that I've seen the dress, I think it's a BM dress but in white.  If you can go there I think you'll be able to try on the same dress but in a different color.

  • Thanks everyone for the advice! It's very helpful. :)

Ordering the bigger size doesn't really bother me at all... wedding dress sizes tend to run small and I certainly don't consider myself to be fat.  My only issue is if it'll be difficult to have the waist and bust taken in to a size 0 and 2 respectively if I get the 6?  A few of my friends recommended a great boutique in town that does alterations.... Should I contact them for advice on the situation?
  • Read the reviews and see if anyone mentions how it fits...usually helps me when ordering online.  If you don't find anything then go with your larger size.
  • If there is a DB near you, you could also have them get your measurements and make a size reccomendation. Or, you could order two different sizes and return the one that doesn't fit.

  • When I was measured my bust was a 4, waist a 2 and hips were between a 2 and 4-  I ordered the 4. AND my dress is a corset. Get the size that fits the largest part of your body.

  • After reading what you wrote, I would order a 4.

For that dress, it doesn't look like it will be tight around the hips so I think you'd be safe with the 4, especially considering your other measurements.

Just keep in mind that each of their dresses, are always slightly different than others. They say that it's because they're hand made. So, even if you tried on a certain size in store, sometimes they come in a little small or big.  But, from what I've heard, and if it were my $150, I'd do the 4. That would hopefully minimize the amount of alterations that you need to do, without being to small.
