Colored sash for bride- yay or nay?

I love the look of a colored sash on a wedding dress BUT I fear in 10 yr I will look back and wish I hadn't. Think early 90's brides hating their headpieces and shoulder pads.

Yay or Nay? Timeless or too trendy?

  • I say yay, but I'm a bit partial as I'll be wearing one.

  • I've seen colored sashes on wedding gowns done very nicely.  They were mostly colors that complemented vs. competed with the dress (aka platinum, champagne, light pink, etc).

And keep in mind that I've rarely seen any pictures of people's weddings that occured decades ago where I thought to myself "wow the look was so classic you could wear that same thing today!" no matter how simple or classic the design was.  I say that you do what makes you happy now and makes you feel beautiful now because most things go out of style so chances are you will probably look back at something in your wedding 20 years from now and think "what was I thinking??".
  • Yay---beautiful way to add color and style to a dress
I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine.
  • it depends.  can we see it??

  • i say yea, if you like it do it! part of the fun of wedding picks is looking back and seeing them, live in the now!
  • Just a suggestion... but what about adding it for the reception?  That is what I am doing...
02.26.11 is the day I finally marry the love of my life...
  • I think it depends on the dress. My dress has a very soft look. I decided to use an ivory sash because the colored one looked too harsh with it. I think they can be fun and if you like it go for it.
  • I say yay! FI's cousin had a pink sash and her BM's had a pink dress with a white sash, turned out very nice.
  • I say nay......But again it depends ...Can we see pics?
  • I say yay.

Colours can add that little "Pop". Granted all eyes are gonna be on you anyway but I always find a well-placed sash/belt helps define whichever waistline you'd like to highlight.

Plus I find the all white part a bit too intimidating.
  • I don't have any pics, just wondering out loud. My colors are plum and apple green and I could see a plum sash being fun. But too much possibly. Lemme try to find an example to show what I am talking about....

  • i really think it depends on the dress.  but my friend wore a white sash for the ceremony and then changed to a purple sash for the reception.  (our BM dresses were purple)  i thought it was cute...but again...it depends on what your dress looks like.
  • I say nay.. I don't know why I just don't really like the way they look but I like the pop of color so what I'm doing is pinning a boutonniere type arrangement of red roses on the side underneath the bust line (like where the sash or a bow would be). Red roses are my flower so it obviously matches my colors and I think it's a more classic way of doing it if that's what you're worried about. Plus then I'll put some roses in my hair and it ties everything together.
  • IMHO, any kind of color on a wedding gown (including sashes) makes it look less like a wedding gown. More prom-like.

  • I have a colored sash on my gown. It sits very low on my waist and it is gold. My gown is Ivory. Maggie Sottero. It has swarovski stones on it as well. I think it is beautiful. I'm not too concerned about how I will feel 10 years from now, all I know is that I love it now and it is extremely comfortable and flattering.
  • I like the idea of putting it on for the reception. Maybe I'm just partial because that's what I'm doing with my veil

  • I might have done this, if my FMIL had not absolutely blown a gasket when she found out I was even thinking about it.  (As it turns out, the dress I got it wouldn't have looked so great with, but oh well....)

I think as long as it works with the style of your dress, and you like it, go for it!

  • I say yes as long as it is more of a neutral color.
  • I say yes!  But I am wearing a colored sash with my own dress (Waters sash with crystals).  I think you should do what you want.  We have pictures of me in my dress with and without the sash and even my Dad thought it looked better with the sash (defined the waist).
  • It's a question of personal taste really. I'm not fond of them unless they're neutral, ivory, champagne etc. I think it can look cheap. But that's just me. Clean and uncomplicated will be timeless.
