Black ok?

What's your opinion on wearing black to a wedding? I'm going to one this weekend and just got a cute little black dress that I'm thinking about wearing. If someone wore black to my wedding I probably wouldn't think twice about it but just wanted to check and see if it was a big no-no or not. TIA!

Re: Black ok?

  • No problem. A lot of ladies wear LBDs to weddings these days.
  • I think black is totally fine...

However, I think I would add some color with accessories...like a chunky yellow necklace w matching yellow shoes!

  • I'm wearing black to my FBIL's wedding, with bright shoes, purse, and sweater.

  • A little black dress is appropriate at all occassions. I wouldn't have a problem with it.

  • Yeah, here in Boston you can count on at least half the women wearing black!

    In that same vein-------

I am a MOB----and HATE dresses----seriously do not own one!  I would prefer to wear a dressy pant suit or some sort of pallazzo pant/top combo---which my daughter is fine with (she's a doll!)------but----

IF I could get away with it----I would consider a black dress----potential to re-use----many more style options, etc......HOWEVER-----two potential problems:
    1.  Bridesmaids wearing black----with pink accents for shoes, clutches, etc.
    2.  Have been told by superstitious and/or very traditional people that this is a major faux pas----indicates I am not in favor of the wedding.....poor taste....inappropriate....

    Thoughts??

  • First, there's nothing wrong with a pantsuit. Nothing at all. If you'd like to wear one, go for it!

Second, there's nothing wrong with wearing the same colors as the bridesmaids. Some brides will say differently, but there's no strict etiquette on it. People USED to say that the MOB wearing black was bad luck, or a sign of the MOB not supporting the marriage, but these days only strict traditionalists get their feathers ruffled over this. Just like black BM dresses, black MOB attire is becoming more common these days.

As for the pantsuit, as long as it fits the formality of the wedding, I don't see a problem in wearing whatever you are most comfortable in.  And my mom is wearing a gorgeous black dress to my wedding, the same color that the bridesmaid dresses are.  She loves it, so I couldn't be happier!
