online dress shopping?

I'm having a realllllly hard time committing a ton of money to a wedding dress.  I get that it's special, but would much rather pay $200 or so online (not a knock off store, but a preowned dress) than to buy the same dress for hundreds more.

Here's my dilemma. I know my mom/sisters/etc are all really excited to go dress shopping, and to be honest, I kinda wanted the "say yes to the dress" moment.  How do you negotiate this?

For anyone that's bought a preowned dress....any website suggestions?

thanks!

Re: online dress shopping?

  • No matter if you buy the dress online or in a store you really need to try it on before committing to anything.  Pictures on the web can be decieving and you really do not know how a dress will fit your body unless you try it on.

With that said, you can certainly still buy a dress from a preowned site.  I would look on those sites and see what you like and then find a store or stores that carry those dresses and make appointments to try them on.  That way you will be able to see what looks good on you, possibly have that "yes" moment, and still be able to save a few bucks buy purchasing the gown pre-owned.

    As for websites...

    www.oncewed.com
    www.recycledbride.com

I would be very careful about buying a dress online, you don't know what you are getting! Then you have to pay a seamstress to fix the flaws and fit.

On site wedding websites, how do you know that the dress wasn't worn by someone else and just cleaned, also was it pre altered?  They'll tell you it was never worn, but was it tried on a lot by other people, this makes a difference.  You may have to pay a cleaners to get it cleaned.

Not worth it, just my opinion!!

I agree with Maggie. I found these preowned sites AFTER I had purchased my dress and I would've much rathered buy a brand better quality dress for the same price I bought my DB gown.

I mean, I loved my dress too but after seeing these beautiful dresses at a fraction of the cost, I had lot of dress regrets.

Have your appointment at a boutique just to try on styles and take your mom and sister with you. You'll still get that bride feeling but even better because you know you're about to save lots of money.

There's lots of dresses sold brand new with tags because brides change their minds and purchase something else.

There was a post last week about a bride that almost got scammed though so be careful with money order transactions, i recommend PayPal for ANY online transaction.

BTW, I've sold and purchased on Recycledbride.com. Note that the knock off sites also post on recycledbride so make sure it's a real person.

    Good Luck.

If you go through a reputable site, like the one's I listed, then you will not have the issues you are describing.  Of course there is always a chance of a bad apple but since these sites are highly known and recommended I doubt it happens often.  Also on these sites they list their street size, tag size, what alterations were done to it, whether or not it has been cleaned, etc.  Finally, the dresses aren't typically tried on by many women because they are actual brides selling the dresses that they bought and then wore on their wedding day.
