White-on-white vs. ivory-on-ivory

Hello!

I went dress shopping for the first time on Saturday.  I know I want a lace dress over a gown / slip underneath. I really liked one dress - still haven't completely decided - but it was hard for me to commit because the sample was in champagne underneath with ivory lace.  Now, I figured I would get white lace on a white gown, but the wonderful salesgirl (she really was wonderful - no sarcasm) said that most people who buy lace usually just get ivory-on-ivory now, as white on white is too bright.

I couldn't tell if she was just telling me this because they had no white on white on the floor to show me, or if it's actually true.  Has anyone bought a lace, white-on-white dress?  Or is it really just way too bright, and everyone just gets ivory-on-ivory?

  • I went to... um. 6 bridal salons, and every single one of the stocked mostly ivory dresses as samples.  David's Bridal was the only one that had a whole truckload of white gowns.  As I tried on some white dresses, I realized that the first 5 salons I went to that all had ivory gowns and told me that "most people just look better in ivory" were REALLLLY right.   Ivory is just softer and more flattering to almost everyone's skin.

  • I have a lace on satin gown and it is all ivory; when I tried on white lace I felt like the lace wasn't as noticeable. It was almost harsh. I liked that the ivory gave the dress a more vintage feel as well. Plus it is really flattering on most skin colors.

The salesgirl is right....ivory looks better on most people.  When I tried on my dress and realized it was the one, I thought it was white until the salesgirl told me it was ivory.  Don't think that ivory = yellow.  I also had tried on a white dress and looking back at the photos it looks awful on me.....paper white does nothing for me (or most people).

This.  My dress is the ivory on champagne... I tried on white or white dresses, and as far as lace goes, it doesn't give the same look without the tone difference.
  • Awesome - great info. I'll probably go with the ivory/ivory. Thank you all!

  • Yes, as a dress supplier, I also suggest you to go ivory on ivory, it is the most popular color for wedding nowadays, few of the customer would order white dresses on our site, I think it is too bright.

  • I was the same way, I TOTALLY thought the dress I had on was white until she told me it was ivory.

Question though... I had the same experience but when I got my dress it was all noticably yellow, not this tricky white-looking ivory I had tried on. Did you have that same experience, or did your dress come in similar to the sample? I don't know what to do, my wedding is <2 months away and my dress looks bone yellow and really warm on me. It's pretty, just not what I was expecting. Did I just have bad luck and the manufacturer is trying to pull the wool over my eyes telling me that "it's to be expected"? Are they just being lazy???
