Tips for Getting Your Gown Specially Designed

I have an idea of what I want but the problem is the gown I want is a few years out of date (its still beautiful and i found it in an old picture search online.)
I want to maybe hire a tailor to have the gown made for me but I'm wondering if it will cost more and if its such a good idea.

Anyone who has had their gown made for them please answer

Re: Tips for Getting Your Gown Specially Designed

  • Have you tried looking on the sites where ladies sell their previously used dresses.
  • Ask on your local board for reommendations on seamstresses in your area.  Often, the independent seamstresses who do alterations will also make gowns.

Show your picture and ideas and ask for an estimate.  It is not necessarily less expensive to have a gown custom-made; they are very labor-intensive.

  • My advice is:
     1. Don't do it, buy a pre-made dress
    2. if you insist on doing it, go to a bridal salon and find a dress as close to the style you think you want as you can find and try it on. This will either confirm for you that that is the style of dress you want, or will show you that it doesn't look good on you.

I was going to have my grandma make my wedding dress (she made my mom's) I picked a patteren I thought I really liked and had her make a sample of it in a cheaper fabric just so I could see the style, shape, and fit of the dress. I am so glad that I decided to have her do that trial run first because it looked AWFUL on me. I then went to the bridal salon with the intention of just figuring out what style looked best on me so she could make a similar dress, I style i decided on was VERY different from what I originally pictured. I actually ended up purchasing a dress that day and am very happy with it. I know I am not the only bride that ends up in a VERY different dress than she thinks she wants. You would think that a custom made dress would be exactly what you want, but  be careful, you may be surprised how it looks on you.
