dress shopping: how late is too late

I've put on some weight while healing from an injury, but I'm an athlete (marathon runner and weight lifter) and expect to lose a good chunk of weight prior to the day.  So, going from a current size 8-10 back to a 2-4 (only a 20 lb difference, but it's a lot on a shorter person).  I feel like it would be a waste of time to shop at this point, but the wedding is only 4 months away.  What do I do? When do I shop?  Thoughts? Experiences?

  • Ususally you would go shopping 6-8 months before the wedding, and some designers take longer.  I would go to a bridal shop and have them show you dresses that you can def get in this time frame since its so close to the wedding date.  You could always try a place like David's Bridal where they have the dresses there and readily available for purchase.

  • I would go ASAP..they can always take in later...You are already risking not getting a dress other than a  "sample" dress

You're already very late!  At this point, you may be limited to David's Bridal or something off the rack.  You still need to factor in time to find it and alterations, so you should get out there now.  Most dresses can be altered down 2 sizes.
  • What if I'm totally ok with David's Bridal?  I'm not in the couture market, but I'd like a dress that fits and doesn't look goofy.
  • Oh yeah, and I'm also looking at tea length dresses.  Nothing super complicated with a train and bustle or anything.  More like 50's 60's vintage kinda stuff.
  • There are other stores, other than Davids that get gowns fast.  Pearlsplace.com and Netbtide.
They have a great relationship with their designers and get gowns very fast.  If you see something online, contact them.
  • Thanks for all the info guys!  I think I'll go ahead and check out David's Bridal sometime this week while I am in town at my parent's house so my mom can go, but I'll definitely check out those other sites!
  • I bought my gown off the rack at a bridal outlet store (look around in your area.. those last years models have to go somewhere!) three weeks before I walked down the aisle and it saved me abotu 1,200 bucks too.
  • You should be going ASAP. At this point you are already too late to order some designers. My dress by Maggie Sottero takes 6 months to come in.
  • Like everyone said, it's always easier to take a dress in than to let it out.  Get going dress shopping and buy it in your current size.  Then you can alter it down as you lose weight.

But you won't know if you're really ok with David's Bridal until you go there and try on.  For me, I didn't like anything at David's Bridal.  Just didn't care for the quality.  I found my dress at another local shop, but they told me it could take up to 8 months.  I'd get out there now no matter what you do.  Good luck!

Went to David's Bridal with my mother yesterday, and tried on one I had selected from the catalog.  The first one was THE one!  I squeezed into a six, and that dress had just come in that day and none of the salespeople had seen it on anyone else yet.  I tried maybe about 4 others, but the first one was exactly what I had envisioned and never thought I'd be able to find.  SO thrilled!  Thanks for pushing me out the door, y'all. :)

Edit:  Since it hadn't been tried on by anyone else, and was a little bit snug on me (aka. perfect for alterations after I lose weight) we went ahead and brought it home!  Both of my parents were sobbing at the sight of me in it.
