White tuxedo with an ivory dress?

My finace is totally set on wearing a white tuxedo for our big day, my dress is ivory. I think that him wearing white is going to make my dress look dingy. His vest and tie would be marine blue.  Any thoughts?Smile

Re: White tuxedo with an ivory dress?

  • Is there a way you could hold the fabric of your dress to the white of the tux to be sure? I can imagine it'd look dingy, but it's hard to say 100%. If it does, maybe try to find an ivory tux? If you can't maybe it'd be time to look into a black tux instead (my totally biased opinion against white tuxes, for what it's worth).

  • My opinion is its a big no no, but there are ways to possibly make it ok, but thats if your fiance will go with it. If he were to have and ivory vest and tie instead, thatll compliment you and he just might be able to pull off his white tux.
Good luck though, men dont change their minds easily. ha!

  • Or see what it looks like with the button up shirt being ivory instead of white, then hed have the white tux and the blue vest and tie

  • This is your wedding, not prom. You'd have to wear a matching white dress with a blue sash or something. Just no. If you already picked out your dress then he has to pick a different tux. He can keep his blue cest

  • AGREED!!!    I picked out the tux-and questioned the white or ivory shirt because my dress is ivory and even the sales associate said absoultely NOT white--it will make your dress look dirty and i am sure you don't want that!

White doesn't make ivory look dirty, it just makes it look like ivory.  In many many many cases an ivory dress is much closer to a men's wear white than a menswear ivory any way.

In other news, tuxedos should be black, with the exception of a white or ivory dinner jacket during the summer months or in the tropics.  The accessories a man (note man since he isn't a teen boy going to prom) should also be black maybe dark grey, hunter green, or maroon.  The goal of classic tuxedo wear is to maximize a masculine physique.  Matchy colors to a bridesmaids dress or what ever takes away from that.  Let men be men.

    This!

Always wear a white shirt with the tux it will not make your dress look dingy. No one will ever notice the difference.

A whole tux in white is another matter. It wont look dingy/dirty but you will have a noticeable difference in the shades. I say go for black. But, in the end it's his choice, so maybe have the tux shop saleperson talk to him.

  • While I don't like the look of a full white tux (white jacket with black pants looks nice though!), I highly doubt it'll make it look dingy.
My dress wasn't IVORY exactly, but it was certainly off white.. and you can baaarely tell in our pictures, if at all.

  • My DH did a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo pants and my dress was diamond white (pale ivory).  Looked great.

  • ALWAYS do a white shirt with a tux.  Even with an ivory dress.  This is what most knowledgeable industry people will tell you (and even Randy from Say Yes to the Dress agrees!)

  • I don't care for an all white tux.  White jacket with black pants is about as far as I would go. I definitely wouldn't do it with an ivory dress though.  It will just look off.
  • I worked as the manager of a bridal salon for 2 years, and I would never suggest a white shirt with a tux when the bride is wearing an ivory dress. It does look "dingy/off" and you're fooling yourself if you think people won't notice, they will notice they just won't say anything to you, just others!! And yes you can tell in photos!! Most people think candlelight is the same as ivory, its not, so the lightest color ivory may be ok with white but it's a no no, I don't care what some fancy-schmancy tv guy says lol Wink
  • I think I have FINALLY talked him into not wearing the white tuxedo/suit. A few tears helped. He has agreed to wear black suit with a white shirt, white vest and tie. Thank goodness!  This is my 2nd dress i've bought, the 1st one was white, so his white suit wasn't an issue, but I bought a 2nd one now and am wearing the new one i purchased. luckily for me I only paid a total of $150 for both dresses! Thanks everyone for the opinions and advice. It's greatly appreciated and just proves that I was right (again) Smile.

No it doesn't.  A white shirt looks like a white shirt.  An ivory dress looks like an ivory dress.  Ivory isn't a dingy white, it is ivory.  No article of clothing another person is wearing is going to make someone else's clothing look dingy or dirty.  Please stop perpetrating truly one of the dumbest myths in all of weddingdom.
