Destination Wedding

Has anyone traveled on US Air with their wedding dress?  I have concerns with the size of garment bag they are saying I need to have for my dress.  51in seems so small!!!  Any advice???

I don't have experience with them, but I recently traveled on United and asked them if they could hold a garment bag (with a suit) in their closet and they say they are no longer allowed to hold garment bags.  They had issues with the closet door bars breaking or something.  They say brides that bring on their dresses are not happy when they're told this.....hopefully it's not the case with US Air!

It sounds like you're wanting to travel with your dress as a carry-on, right? Do you have a full length dress? The 51" does seem a little short. The standard full length dress bag is around 68". You would need to try to fold your dress over in that bag in order to fit it in that bag and put it in the overhead bin.  Or you would need to check it as an oversized item. Which could get pretty pricey.

Have you considered shipping it to your destination? (Buy the extra insurance.) That might be your best option.

  • Or check with your where you are staying if they have a steamer that you can borrow to steam out the wrinkles in your dress (allowing you to fold it & not worry) or maybe even offer a service to be able to do that for a reasonable cost or of a reliable cleaner in the area where you can get it pressed out when you get there.

[QUOTE]Most airlines have a closet that will accommodate wedding gowns.  Just call the airline - you have to know to ask for it.  They're very nice to brides.

United doesn't do it anymore.  They said lots of brides are upset when the find out.
  • I'm a flight attendant for a major airline and I've had a lot of brides bring their dresses on my planes and I always try to find a place in the closet for the dress. But it totally depends on which aircraft you are flying on and the closet situation on that aircraft! Also, even though the dress is hanging it is usually smushed in the closet because there is not a lot of space in the aircraft closets.

Now for the bad news! I'm one of the nicer flight attendants and I like to help people! There are a lot of other flight attendants like me out there! :-)  But as with many jobs we have a lot of bitter mean individuals working in the skies and unfortunately they don't go out of their way to help a passenger! Hopefully you get lucky and the flight attendant will let you put it in the closet! BUT just in case you have a "meanie" I'd ask the agent if you could board early then if you can't put it in the closet you would have plenty of empty overhead bin space in which to place your dress! Just make sure no one jams their suitcase on top of it!

Good luck and I hope you have a fantastic wedding!

  • Okay... I JUST (5mins ago) called United because this is who I'm flying when I go to my wedding and they told me they will put a wedding dress in a closet as long as there's space. What gives????
