Who presses/steams the dress?

I was just curious how close to the wedding I should have my dress pressed & steamed, and who typically does this - a seamstress, or a dry cleaner?  Bridal shop?  I had my dress altered by a private seamstress who does not do this...I'm a little clueless about it, so just looking for some direction!

Re: Who presses/steams the dress?

  • I know that my dry cleaner steams wedding gowns, so that might be a good place to check.

My dress was steamed when the alterations were done. For the two weeks between when I picked it up and the wedding, I hung mine from the top of the closet door in my spare bedroom. I opened the door slightly so the train could reach the bed, and spread it out to keep it from wrinkling.

  • I got reccomedations from my alterations lady however, because of the material my dress was made from they would not touch it!  I had a Maggie Soterro-Adeline.  The manger explained that if they steamed anything on it that the shinyness if the material would go away and ruin the dress!  I was mortified as it was Wednesday and my wedding was Friday! I called a few more places and they pretty much told me the same thing! So instead of having a breakdown I just said OH WELL and the day of my wedding I hung it in the bathroom and turned the hot water on to steam it myslef.  It ended up being fine but I almost lost it! Read the tag on the inside..mine did tell me no steam but I never bothered to look.
