Rookie dress question

Okay everyone im about to start shopping for my wedding dress yay! However I have never been wedding dress shopping before. I am making appts at a couple of places but seeing as how ive never done this and feel clueless im wondering if theres anything you should have with you when you try on dresses? Any special attire you should wear or bring with you? Any help with this would be much appreciated. Thanks

Re: Rookie dress question

  • Wear a strapless bra and full butt underwear (I would not recommend a thong).  It should be underwear you are comfortable wearing around a consultant who would be helping you in and out of dresses.  I would recommend wearing skin-colored underwear.  I would also bring pictures of dresses you like.  This will help the consultant figure out what your style is (do you want strapless or halter, mermaid or princess, etc).

  • Even if you have your mind set on a certain kind of dress, be open to trying on others.  I was convinced I was going to get a trumpet cut dress covered in sparkles.  I ended up in a full A-line with NO sparkle at all.

  • Try on at least 1 of every style dress. You'd be amazed; what looks good on the rack might look terrible on you, and vice versa. Be open minded about color/fit until you find something that you truly fall in love with! And definitely wear appropriate undergarments for changing in a room with the associate!

  • Bring pictures of what you like so that the consultant has more of an idea of what you like but be open to trying on other styles. When my consultant brought in my wedding dress, my mother and I both thought she was deranged and thought "heck no." Yea, that's the one I ended up buying. If you don't have a strapless bra, don't worry too much. Some salons have bras and shoes that you can try on with a dress to get a better sense of how things will look. If not, you can always pull down your bra straps and tuck them in when you're trying on a strapless dress.

  • I would bring shoes the hight and style that you would want as well, and if you have any jewelry that you know you would want to wear. Like grandmas pearls, or mom's earings!
  • Don't try on anything you can't afford.  It'd be sad to try something on and fall in love with it and it not be in your price range

  • we should make this a sticky? i am still new....any vets have clues on how to do this????
  • Go online and look at pics from designers before you go to the store so that you can get an idea of what's out there.  The possibilities are literally endless!  Some designer sites you could try....

  • To shanghaid this would be a good sticky but I think only the moderator can make it one so maybe send her a PM if you believe this is a topic worth saving.

  • wear FULL BUM underwear.  I made this mistake twice. it's embar-ass-ing (all puns intended!)  :)

As PP's have said, be open to different styles, my dress is one i never would have tried on, but did 'for fun' and it worked out.  all the styles i had thought i wanted did not work for me at all. so keep an open mind and have fun with it.  but 'have fun' in your budget. don't even pretend to try to maybe possibly think about trying something out of your price range.  Mr murphy says that is the dress you will love!!

oh....and don't worry if you don't cry!!!  TV makes you think you will cry, i think majority of brides don't cry.  you can still love a dress and not cry in it.

    have fun!!
