2 sizes isn't necessarily true, depending on the style of the dress.  The corset gives you room in the torso area, but if the gown is a dropped waist or mermaid, etc., the corset will have no impact on the bottom part of the dress.

Most gowns can be altered to be let out about 1 size or taken in up to 2 sizes before you lose the structure of the dress.  Additionally, if you tighten the corset too much, it will often look funny from the back.  You will want to have the gown altered to actually fit your body and use the corset to give you that extra snug here or there, as needed.  But, if the dress is way to big, your lacing will end up being all the way closed, and isn't very flattering.

All of this.  And remember that the type of fabric plays a big role in how much a dress can be let in.  If you are working with a softer more flowy type of fabric like chiffon or tulle you will most likely have less room to let the dress out because there just isn't enough fabric to work with.  If you have a dress with a heavier type of fabrice (satin, taffeta, etc) you will have a bit more wiggle room.

All I can say is buy a dress that fits you at your biggest point.  Don't worry about what the size says becasue the only people who will know what you ordered is you, the sales lady and God.

  • Well I bought my dress Saturday. And when they told me the size they were ordering I was really confused.. All the dresses I had tried on were smaller sizes. So im not sure if it just the designer or not.. me and my bm are going to start the weight watchers in May. Id like to lose about 30 or 40 lbs and i just dont want to ruin my dress..

I was a 16 in some designers and a 20 in others. You have to choose your size by your largest measurement.    30-40 pounds can easily be 1-3 dress sizes, depending on where on your body you lose the weight. That may be an issue for alterations.
