Disappointment at Vera Wang

Behind the airy walls at Vera Wang bridal in Boston, lies a serious quality control issue.

I fell in love with the sample dress that I tried on and put in an order.  Six months later, when it arrived, it the color and quality of the fabric was off.  I was told that the color was due to a different die lot.  This would be understandable if I was shopping at Walmart, but not at a store carrying a very expensive designer label such as Vera Wang.  The quality of the fabric was nothing like the sample.  It felt like a rag.

I refused to take delivery of dress, as it was not what I ordered and not what was sold to me.  The owner offered to discount the sample that I liked so much, but I paid for a new dress, and did not want the sample that has now been used for the past 6 months.  Kind of like wearing a rental car on your wedding day-no thanks.  She also tried to convince me that it was in fact serviceable with alterations.  But sadly no amount of altering can fix the dingy yellow color or the feel of the raggety fabric.  So left with no alternatives, I asked for my deposit to be refunded.

Of course the owner refused, and I of course I refused to accept that as I am not receiving the item that I paid for.  This is now being escalated down the route of small claims court.

I hope by writing this, that other brides can avoid the same issue, save themselves the heartache and purchase their gown from a more reputable manufacturer.

Ugh, that's horrible. :( I'm so sorry that happened.. that is completely unexcusable.
  • I'm sorry to hear this.  I was less than impressed at the Vera Wang in Boston too.  The samples were raggedy--dirty, broken straps, broken zippers, etc.  Not what I was expecting.  I figured if I was going to spend so much on a dress, I'd buy the Monique Lhuillier dress I loved from another much cleaner salon.

When you compare the ordered dress to the sample, what did they say?  Did they say anything about the quality of the fabric?  The dye lot isn't going to change the quality.

    Good luck to you!
  • :( bummer. Unfortunately, dye lots can be different even with designer labels. However, the quality of the fabric should not be different...

I'd file a complaint with the BBB, if you haven't already.
  • Wow. That's heartbreaking. It astonishes me that a company would be so cavalier concerning a woman's perfect wedding dress .. at least now I won't always wish I "coulda had a Vera Wang" .. Frown
    * if you could only see the way he loves me : maybe you would understand : if you could only see how blue his eyes can be when he says : when he says he loves me
  • Just FYI - the dye lot thing is usually legit. Also, the feeling of the fabric you found on the sample was probably BECAUSE it was tried on so much. The fabric has had time to loosen up and "worn in" so to speak.

Sorry you're feeling this way, but just pointing out that they may be the exact same fabrics.

  • What can you expect from Vera now as she is doing designs for David's bridal.  What quality will she be making now, not for me!  Just a thought.
  • I was so very lucky to have a Luxe Vera Wang for my Blessing last year and a bespoke dress made for the Wedding - I tried on the sample in NYC and ordered it in the UK at Selfridges - The service in both stores was the best I received from the WORLD WIDE search for the perfect dress - I mean - USA, UK, Australia, Dubai and many in between.

As previously stated the colour may vary due to dye lots and also the feel of the fabric of a dress worn in is very different to one that has never been tried on!

I appreciate that when things are not as imagined it is very stressful to deal with, especially when a lot of money has changed hands - I had two weddings, a day apart in two countries with different climates and fully understand things not working out as imagined - my bridesmaid dresses were a NIGHTMARE and I have 6 unwearable, expensive made to order dresses and jackets in a drawer and other 6 outfits probably stuffed in the bridesmaids wardrobe never to be worn again (at great expense).

I would just like to say that from my personal experience I would not hesitate recommend Vera Wang both in NYC and Selfridges - The dress was a special order for the UK - they did not even have a sample and had never viewed the dress as they believed it was discontinued - the person who did the alterations in London was out of this world and the work exquisite!
