Modifying lace-up back to button back? Is it possible?

Has anyone had experience doing this?

  • I definitely understand that, but I think I can get a decent fit with zippers. I love love love buttons.

  • Wouldn't there not be enough fabric unless you ordered the dress to be too large for you?  Once my lace up dress was altered properly, the two back pieces did not meet in the middle of my back.  I also agree with CMGr that I'd be worried about the fit.
  • I was thinking about the lack of fabric too.

Even if I found a seamstress that said that they could do this for me, I would be worried about the end result and the way the dress fit.  I personally would keep the dress as is- however the the way the dress closed in the back was never a priority for me

  • I originally had a dress with a corset back. My new(second dress) is a zipper and double row of buttons and I love this dress sooo much more. Why not just find a dress you don't want to change and save yourself the alterations cost?

  • It depends on the dress. I would ask before purchasing it, if you haven't already, but even if it can be done it will change the overall look and structure. Also, be prepared for some high alterations costs.
  • Yes, I suppose you are right, if I don't like the whole dress, maybe it's just not for me.  I love the rest of it though. :(  I will keep looking.

I tried to see if the designer/manufacturer could change it but the lady at the store said she's 99% sure they won't because people have asked before.

  • When I ordered my dress, I had the option of corset back or zipper. I went with corset so that I wouldn't have to worry about finding undergarments that would give the same effect as a corset back dress. But, yeah, you generally make that request at the time you order so that you'll have enough fabric, etc. to do it

  • I am coverting my dress from a zipper to a corset backing, I had to order a yard of fabric at the time I ordered my dress. I have never heard of converting a dress into a zipper. But good luck on your hunt!!!!
