Short dresses

My fiance and i have decided on an outdoor wedding, at the beach just down the walk from our reception venue. Our wedding is in late april of 2011 and in florida even April gets a little warm. I have nothing against short dresses, but I had always planned to wear a long white dress and be very traditional. Well now that we are having an outdoor wedding on the beach, I am leaning more toward a shorter dress. I am just curious how everyone feels about them, when you see a bride in a shorter dress, the one I have chosen in just below the knee, what is your immediate reaction? I have thought about a long gown for formal pictures that will be taken the day before the ceremony of my fiance and I and then the shorter dress for the day of.

My bridesmaids are all wearing short dresses as well as matching flip flops and I am wearing flip flops in the same color as the BM dresses.

Any and all input is appreciated.

I think a shorter dress's are great, esp. for a beach wedding. I am wearing a shorter dress too ( I just haven't found it yet!) I'm sure it will be perfect for your wedding!

would you regret not wearing the longer dress. They now make many many beach style longer gowns that are light and flowy so are good for warmer weather. I am from florida too, my best friend just got married on the beach and she wore a formal long dress and was very happy with her decision and this is in June! 

I think you have to go with your gut will you look back and wish you wore them. I think they are cute for some people but personally I would stick with long, when else can you wear a real wedding dress ( never!). 

Anyway alternative to flip flops that are good for sand but look a little more formal are wedges. Probably can find then in the same color as brides maids dresses and just look a little classier. 

Anyway that is my opinion, go with your gut.

I was in love with this dress (http://tinyurl.com/2vxv5d2) from Alfred Angelo for the longest time, but then I realized I was getting married in October and while it can still be hot in the south that time of year, it might be better to have a longer dress just in case. Plus I found I am probably a bit too short to pull off that style. AA has a lot of great dresses on their website that are perfect for beach weather and some that are tea length and slightly longer in the back, giving the appearance of having a train. Try on both styles and ask about dresses in lighter fabrics that would be better for warm climates. GL.

Woops, just above the knee! But I really love this dress, the only down side may be the empire type waist as I am not big but have a little pooch and empire waists seem to make even the smallest tummies look like prego bellies. I am still on the hunt though for the perfect dress that is flowy and the correct length, oh how I wish I had a budget that allowed a Kleinfeld trip, lol don't we all. If any other brides to be have found short dresses they love, post away. I'd love to see the different tastes that everyone has!

thats a beatiful dress im getting marriend in fl in september and i only wish i had bought a short dress, not that mine isnt beautiful but whilst you will be nice a cool i will be sweating my arse off go for it

I am wearing a tea-length gown and I love it.  Everyone asks about my dress and when I say that, they all say it is very me.  I am not a gown kind of girl.  I love traditional with a twist, so it suits me.

I think on the beach you can do either.  If you want a bottom with more volume, do a short dress with volume to keep it light.  If you want a long dress, keep it straight to be beachy. 

No matter what, the dress just has to be you!

I actually just purchased my short wedding dress last Friday.  I am so excited about it-it fits my personality perfectly.  I am having an afternoon wedding in July, so I found that a short dress would be more fitting.  I think a short one for the beach would be perfect as well.  Plus, I just didn't feel right in big, long dresses-I felt like I was playing dress up.  Here is a link to the one I picked, but it might not be flowy enough for a beach wedding.  Good luck and you'll know when you find the right dress.

Thank you! I have actually made an appointment[my sixth bridal appointment] for this saturday and I've gone through the Alfred Angelo web site and marked down each dress I like. I have 11 chosen so far, so lets hope! I found the dress I wanted at Davids about a month or so ago and cried, but now I am changing tastes and venues so Im searching again.

The reason for a short dress is because our guests are going to be seated on the beach, and we will be up on the boardwalk to exchange our vows. I don't want a long dress to get snagged on splinters or wood because the boardwalk is older.

if you love the long dress there are tons of long casual destination dresses so you would not have to give up your dream. jersy or chiffon fabric would casual and elegant but very light weight, even a fancy cotton maxi dress could work

I've thought about wearing a tea-length dress, but I'm wearing Chucks with my dress, so I think it would probably make my legs look really stumpy. 

Alfred Angelo has a TON of gorgeous short dresses.  If I was a heels kind of girl, I'd be all up on that!
