It's been a while since I looked for a dress, and forgot all the names of the stores I checked that had cheap dresses.

Refresh my memory?  They were department stores.

FWIW, you can easily find a dress at a bridal shop for MUCH less than you will pay for one at JCrew.   

Check out white/ivory prom dresses and formal dresses, or look at simpler "destination" lines at bridal salons.  You should easily be able to find something for under $500.

My dress was $400 at davids bridal and they have alot of sales..I know my MOH got her dress there for $100 and it was beautiful!

I also second ordering a bridesmaid dress in white.  I love my sister's MOH dress.  I would have gotten that in white if I had not already purchased my dress and only spent $150.

I got my dress from Aria.  It was $250 including shipping and I got to pick the fabric and length (you can order free swatches).  They'll send you a dress in the style you like to try on if you can't make it to one of their three showrooms (Boston, LA, DC).  My dress was wonderful quality and arrived over a month ahead of schedule (about six weeks after I placed the order).
