Modesty Panel Help!!

I ordered my dress from Davids Bridal a size smaller than i am so that it would fit when i lost weight, but since my dress came in 2 weeks ago it doesnt fit! The modesty panel that is attached to the dress has an extra 2 inches to be moved over but i still need another 3 inches at this point. It is around my bust and right under my bust that its too small. What should i do? Can i order a larger modesty panel from Davids Bridal to replace the original or do they not do that? My 1st alterations appointment is in exactly 9 weeks and my wedding is in just under 20 weeks.

Re: Modesty Panel Help!!

  • I'm assuming you are talking about the modesty panel in the back that goes under the corset?  You could try calling David's to see if they have a larger modesty panel, but I think you will probably not like the way the corset looks totally stretched apart in the back.

You are more than likely going to have to let the seams out as far as they will go.  Most dresses have between 1-2 inches to be let out... so, that will help.  But, if you have 3 full inches, you might be in trouble.  Hopefully, you can lose a little more weight before your first alterations appointment.

I am honestly surprised your consulant thought it was a good idea to order your dress too small.  That is a horrible suggestion. You can always take a dess in, but making it bigger isn't always possible.   Can you talk to David's and see if they can exchange it for a size larger.  I would fall on the mercy of the manager and explain that your consultant gave you bad advice and see if they can get the dress in your size.

But did the consultant give bad advice.  From her post she only said that she ordered it a size smaller so it would fit when she lost weight.  No where did she say that her consultant told her to do that.  OP, if you decided to order the dress a size smaller then what was recommended that was a bad decision on your part.  You are never guaranteed that you will lose the right amount of weight in the right amount of time.  But that ship has sailed.

You need to take this dress to a good semastress (not the one's at DB).  Show her your concerns.  If it the dress isn't made of chiffon or a similar material you should have some room to work with but not much.  I would see if you can get a larger modesty panel from DB or even see if you can get a piece of material that your dress is made from so that your seamstress can make you a bigger one.  But like PP said, I don't think you are going to like the corset so stretched open.

Keep away from soda, sugary and salty foods and try to eat cleanly until your wedding day.  Also, make sure you do some cardio (no weights, the last thing you need to do is build yourself up) to help promote your weight loss.  Also drink a lot of water...this will help to wash out any unnecessary sodium in your body to keep you from bloating.

I guess what I meant by "my consultant gave me bad advice", I was assuming that her consultant didn't adamantly try to disuade her from making a bad decision.  Everywhere I went, the consultants were saying "do NOT buy a dress that doesn't fit you today.  Buy the size that you are today and if you lose weight, take it in".

DB has so many dresses ... some of them with super fast shipping dates. Maybe if you beg, they'll just let you exchange for the correct size.   It's a long shot, but worth a try before you spend a fortune trying to get that dress altered so much.
  • Agreed with the PPs. When I worked as a consultant, all of our dresses could be bought off the rack.  A couple of times I had women who swore up and down that they were loosing weight, but the truth is that you never really know what is going to happen when you get closer to your wedding.  I always, always said that it was a huge risk to buy a dress that was too small.

I would say, like the other ladies, that you should first ask if you can exchange the dress, then ask for a bigger panel, and if not, ask if a seamstress would be able to make you a new one to fill the gap.  Depending on the dress, it may or may not look ok.
If you just decide to get the dress altered and see how much they can let it out, it will end up costing a pretty penny.

But please don't blame it on a consultant.
  • I ordered my dress in January and was fortunate to be able to re-order a size smaller on February 17. The dress arrived on  March 18 - a full 2 months earlier than they initially thought.  The great things about the corset back is that you can make the gown a bit smaller by lacing tighter.  I would want the gown a tad roomier, but  I would ask the alterations department what your options are.  You have 9 weeks until the  "official" 1st apt, but I wouldn't wait until then.  I'd call today!

  • I just wanted to fill everyone in, I did in fact take my dress in and spoke with the manager. She was very understanding and simply ordered me a dress in the next size up and excepted mine as a return. Hopefully the new dress comes in before my first alterations appointment or ill just have to reschedule. Thanks for all the advice ladies :-)
