Turning an old veil into a new one.

My grandma gave me her veil that she wore on her wedding day over 40 years ago. He mom made the veil and it is attached to a small tiara, but being that it is over 40 years old the tiara has missing stones and does not have all of the luster that it used to. I really want to use her veil because it means a lot to me. is exactly what I am looking for, and counts as my something old. I guess I was hoping someone could help me with a way that it could be repurposed onto a hair comb or something else so I can use it. It is also very wrinkled and I am not sure how to take care of a veil to get all of that out and make it straight again. I am open to any types of suggestions, and thank you for your help!!

For attaching the veil to a comb I think YouTube will be your friend.  I made my own veil and attached it to a comb but I have been sitting here trying to figure out the best way to tell you how I did it, but none of the ways I can think of make sense LOL!

As for wrinkles, you can either take the veil to a local dry cleaners and have them steam it, or you could first try hanging it in the bathroom while the shower is going to naturally steam it out.  And, I am not sure since it is an older veil, but you could try some wrinkle releaser spray as well.

If you are unsure how to do the hair comb yourself I am sure a local seamstress could do it for you very inexpensively.

Edit:  You could also browse veils in person to see how they are attached to the comb.

  • For removing the tiara, use a pair of very sharp, pointy scissors and trim away whatever is holding it to the tiara.

To clean it (I'm assuming you'd want to), use Ivory Snow soap that is near the detergent, intended for baby's clothes. It's very mild.

Fill a bathroom sink with nice warm water, add the soap, and swish together to mix. Put the veil in there, squishing the bubbles/soap throughout. You can generally leave it in the warm water for up to 10-20 minutes, rinse and repeat. If it's really yellowed you may not be able to get it truly white.

Once you rinse out all the water & soap, lay out a towel or as many as you need to fit the veil on the towel(s). Roll the veil in the towels into a log. Gently squeeze out all the remaining water.

You can then lay down or hang on a hanger to fully dry. I generally hang things in the bathroom while I'm showering to get wrinkles out. Over time they should all fall out.

    Good luck.
