Synthetic materials

Hello Everyone,

I hear that using synthetic materials on a dress will bring the cost of the wedding dress down and make it more affordable...but I hear the material might cause rashes, etc. So is it worth it? How do the pictures come out and can people tell the difference?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You are going to get varied answers.  I can tell in pictures if fabrics are silk or synthetic, I like the way silk looks much better.  

The lower cost designers have synthetic materials, think Maggie, AA, Davids, Mori Lee etc. 

Higher end dresses will be made of silk.  Keep in mind that satin is a weave not a material, you can have silk or polyester satin.   

As for causing rashes, do you wear polyester on a day to day basis?  I do not, but if I did it wouldn't case a rash per say.  

When trying on gowns beading and some lace around my neck, arms, and chest did irritate my skin, but I have very sensitive skin.  Maybe that is what people are referring?

Over all it's your choice and pocketbook which will make the decision.  

I did buy a silk sample at a great price.  Look at sample sales, consignment shops, and places like Bride Power if you want a high end gown at a lower cost.

my dress is a polyester charmouse, that feels alot like silk, it is soft supple, glides over my skin and is crazy comfy, nice sythetics can be as decadent as their more organic counterparts but alot cheaper

Synthetics won't move, drape, or breathe as well as silk will. They will never have quite the same sheen either. I can tell at a glance whether a dress is poly or silk. Personally, I won't wear polyester if I can avoid it on any occasion so I certainly wasn't going to for my wedding. As for rashes- I've never heard that. People wear synthetic fibers on a daily basis without trouble. There may be the rare person who has a freak allergy, but that's not the norm.
