Advice please?

So, I'm trying to make this work-

What I want in a dress: Comfortable and cheap.

I want to be able to tie my own shoes on my wedding day. I want to be able to sit down in the dress. I do not want to be complaining about the dress the entire reception.

We are aiming for $500, but we have considered dresses as expensive as $750.

What everyone else wants in a dress: traditional and looks good on me.

Everybody wants me in the poofy "bridal" gown because we're getting married in a church and "you have to wear a real wedding gown in a church" (as opposed to a dressed up evening gown or a destination-style gown, which I have suggested). I'm a plus-sized bride. Everyone wants me floor-length, with a train, a-cut or ball gown.

Does anyone have any suggestions on designers or dresses I should look at to please everybody?

Re: Advice please?

  • Have you gone dress shopping yet? I think you'd be surprised to find that there are lots of options in your price range that you would probably be happy with. Is there any style (other than comfortable) that has caught your eye? Any pics??

[QUOTE]This was my dress.  I loved it because it was ridiculously comfortable, not heavy at all, was simple like I wanted it to be, but still had the "bride look."  I think I paid $550.  <a href="http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/pr/4524/18481?gdftrk=gdfV2619_a_7c732_a_7c2817_a_7c18481" rel="nofollow">http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/pr/4524/18481?gdftrk=gdfV2619_a_7c732_a_7c2817_a_7c18481</a>

I actually tried on that dress, it was fabulous! But I ended up falling in love with another Mori Lee.

OP- Check out Mori Lee some are above your budget, but there are a lot of beautiful dresses in your price range. And my dress was so comfortable all day.

  • You really need to just try on dresses and see what you like when you have a dress on. Make sure that you like it, and don't blindly follow others-- thought I doubt that's a problem for you

  • I have the opposite problem. Everyone thought I looked fantastic in a simple floor length white sheath dress with no embelishments. I'm not a blingy person, but I wanted at least a little detailing!

<div>That's funny.  Yeah this dress was only the 2nd one I tried on and I said okay I'm done.</div><div>
</div><div>OP find a bridal salon that has Mori Lee as well as several other designers.  You will be surprised at how many dresses you could find in your price range.  </div><div>
If you want comfort and to be able to move, I would stay away from anything with boning in the bodice because it doesn't bend well and pick up skirts because they can get very heavy.  But just try on dresses and find ones you like and what aspects of certain dresses you like.  I was the same way as you though and was more about comfort with my dress, and that's why when I loved how my dress looked and felt I was done shopping.</div>

  • You might check out Maggie Sottero. Even though I am not sure how much her cheapest dress is.
  • I got mine from the wedding department at Macys.  It was less than $300.  There were other, fancier dresses there too.
  • I am a plus size bride as well. I bought an Oleg Cassini dress from David's Bridal. It was more expensive than your budget, but they are generally included on the sales (which is when I bought mine) so keep your eyes open for the dress sales!

I am getting married in a formal church as well and our reception is a pretty formal place as well - so I went with a traditional, formal ball gown. http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Strapless-satin-ball-gown-with-beaded-embroidery-8CT291_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Size-Plus-Sizes

  • I would say try on various styles of dresses, because originally I wanted a very plain dress, no beading or jewels, A-line skirt with straps.  Well after I ventured out and tried on other types of dresses, I found my dream dress which had an A-line skirt, but it's strapless with some beading on the front and back.  I got my dress at David's Bridal and they have really good prices and a good selection of dresses in your budget. :)

I'm with you lady, I wanted something pretty, but also comfortable and affordable.  I found something that fit all those requirements and still made me feel beautiful.

My gown came from David's for $199.  http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Satin-A-line-with-Asymmetrical-Skirt-T8076 The only thing I had done to it was take it from a straight across to a sweetheart neckline, and wear a petticoat underneath to make it poof out a little more.  The alterations were very inexpensive.

There's no train to fuss with so its definitely a "pee by yourself dress", but it still gives you the "wedding gown" look.  Plus, it has an a-line cut with asymmetrical ruching across the waist, which is super flattering!  If you want to see pics of it on please private message me.  I'd be happy to share!

  • As others said I would def. check out Mori Lee.  Mine is a 2011 style and was $750 dollars.  When I walked out in it my mom and family guessed it was at least $2,000.  It has amazingly intricate beading that looks very expensive but was such a great price.  All of her other dresses are great prices to whether you are looking for a more simple elegant look or an over the top fancy one like I got!

    Here is mine:

  • My 3rd choice was a Mori Lee - very budget friendly and pretty dresses.  I ended up with a Maggie Sottero - and went a bit over budget (but love it - http://www.weddingshoppeinc.com/pr/Jessica/7004?gdftrk=gdfV2619_a_7c732_a_7c2817_a_7c7004). And it is very comfy - I wouldn't have it any other way!  Her corsets just felt a little better on me than the Mori Lee's.  Maggie dresses start in the $600-$800 range - and since you are looking for something simpler, you should be able to stay in the top end of your budget.  Her Destinations line is vey pretty and not overly fussy.

  • One of the shops here "makes" you try on one dress of every style, even if you think you won't like it.  I was completely against a strapless gown - until I tried one on.  That's what I ended up with and I loved it.  Try on a few style options and you'll find something you love, I guarantee it.  And try to ignore the people telling you what you have to do.  My grandmother was apalled that I wore tennis shoes, but you know what?  I was the only one who lasted all night without taking her shoes off!
