Would you wear a secondhand dress?

Just curious. I just know some brides buy these crazy expensive dresses and they sell them online after their wedding, and wondering if I should look into that as we are on a budget.

Re: Would you wear a secondhand dress?

  • I bought a dress new and then almost bought a "pre-owned" dress instead because I wasn't happy with it.  I think there is no problem with doing that, just make sure it is not a knock off or anything.

If I were to do it over, I would probably go that route.  My advice would be to go shopping at the stores, pick out 1 or 2 dresses that you like, then start looking on the classifieds here and on sites like "preownedweddingdresses.com" and see if anyone is selling that specific dress.  That way, you are not buying a dress without knowing what it looks like on you.
  • I would definitely wear a secondhand dress, especially if it was half the price of a new one and I didn't have to do many alterations.
  • Same as PP. I wish I had looked a little harder to find my dress preowned, although I still got a good deal on it (20% off during a trunk show).
  • I bought a sample dress. In a way, its almost second-hand, because so many people have had it on! I would definitely get a second-hand dress.

  • I bought a sample dress. Does that qualify as "pre-owned?"

  • Absolutely I would.  I tried hard to find the dress I wanted, or one similar, used but with no luck.

I absolutely would have if I'd found a dress I liked.  I ended up buying new, but I dontated my dress, so hopefully another bride will be able to get some use out of it.

  • I bought a vintage dress (it is in perfect condition) because I love it more than any other dress I've seen.  I love vintage clothes (not just dresses) and if they're in good shape and a good price...I go for it!

    Best wishes.
  • I, personally, would not have.

  • I bought my Pronovias gown from Once Wed - and saved $2,200.  The dress is perfect, and I never thought I would be able to afford something so gorgeous!
  • I would for sure.  I'm snobby and wanted a silk dress.  I ended up buying a sample and I then had it altered into my dream dress, but if I found exactly what I wanted in stores I would have looked for it on used sites, plus my local consignment.
  • If I was on a tight budget, I'd definitely wear a secondhand dress!  As long as I had tried it on beforehand and knew it was the one.  People buy samples all the time (which have probably been worn by hundreds of girls), I'd actually prefer to wear a dress just one girl wore =]

  • If you have the money then go for it. But I personally wouldn't. You spend so much on your one wedding dress that you are only going to were for one day, why spend another couple hundred of dollars for a second dress? I think its silly to spend hundreds to thousands on a dress your going to wear for 15 minutes to an hour..

  • I would.

  • JesandNathan - I think you misread the post.  She asked about a SECONDHAND dress, not a second dress!  OP is talking about spending less, not spending more :)
  • I would have, but I couldn't find the right size. There aren't a lot of second-hand options if you're a homunculus.

  • Sure, especially if I could not find what I wanted brand new.  My best friend wore a secondhand dress -- her mom's.  I don't think it is a big deal.
