Sweetheart Alteration

Hi ladies!

So after trying on a bazillion dresses I finally decided on Justin Alexander 8484. I love the dress just how it is, mainly because I really like the pearls, but I alos love a dress with a sweetheart neckline.  So my question is (and I will ask my bridal store when my dress comes in) do you think it would be possible to turn this dress into a sweetheart neck line?  More importantly, do you think it would look good?

Here is the dress...

Re: Sweetheart Alteration

  • That is a beautiful dress, and I think it would look nice with a sweetheart neckline but I think the aleration would probably be quite difficult (read: expensive) with the way the top has all that pleating.

You should talk to a seamstress about it.

  • That dress is stunning, but it may be hard to alter.  It looks like that neckline with the pleats is an integral part of the dress.  I actually had the neckline on my dress altered to a sweetheart, but it was just satin and lace.
  • I think it would be easier if the pleates were sewn into the dress and not stick out as much... But sweetheart would look lovely!! My dress is sweetheart too but its partially covered by flowery strap... I dont know what to do myself...

  • Ask them to order it directly into a sweetheart. Mine is a Casablanca and it was only $50 to have it made into sweetheart directly from the manufacturer.

One of my friends had a dress with a pleated crumb-catcher top like that, and she was able to get it turned into a sweetheart.  It might cost a little, but it should be possible.

I wish I had thought of this before! I odered it in December and it never even crossed my mind that I might be able to have this dress and a sweetheart neckline. Darn!

  • Personally I would leave it. The crumb catcher seems to be an important part to the dress. I think it might look weird with a sweatheart neckline

  • I feel that if you love it the way it is then don't alter it.  By changing it to a sweetheart it may alter the whole look of the dress causing you to not like it anymore and once it is altered it can't be undone.

Your best bet is to have your seamstress pin it into a sweatheart neckline the best she can and decide from there, but IMO, I like it as is. (I love the bottom of the dress...gorgeous)

  • While you might want a sweetheart neckline, to be honest, I think the dress is stunning as it is. After looking at it, I'd be afraid of ruining the uniqueness by attempting to change the neckline. I've sewn for over 40 years, and I wouldn't tackle it now that you've ordered it that way.
  • I think that neckline ia gorgeous with thay dress! I wouldnt touch it
  • I didnt even consider that i might not like it after, and that the 'look' of the dress could be totally different.  I like the pinning suggeestion to get an idea of how it would look.

Thanks for all your feedback!! This has been super helpful!
