(XP) I FOUND THE GOWN!! sorry its a little long

With the help of my 5 bridesmaids, mother, and future mother in law I found my wedding dress yesterday!! I originally had my heart set on this one maggie sottera dress, and actually scheduled the appointment at the salon because they carried it 2 months ago. I was then highly discurranged when i found out earlier this week they no longer carried it. Surprisingly enough "the dress" I selected ended up only being the 4th one i tried on, followed by many other awful contenders. It also wasn't a maggie which really surprised me. Following my appointment we started the search for bridesmaids dresses and I quickly became overwhelmed. I originally said I wanted to stick to a strick budget for my girls (in my opinion there is no reason for them to spend $$$ on a dress they may only wear for 8 hours and that could potentially not even be something they would traditionally pick for themselves). I also said I wanted a light purple chiffon dress and wasn't interested in satin or dark purples. well don't you know after trying on what seemes like 20 different chiffon light purple dresses, it was quickly obvious that the fabric and color were not going to suit everyone, and mixing wasn't going to work either. Well guess what we eneded with?... short satin plum dresses!! I can't help but feel a little discourgaed because it completely changes my whole vision of the day, but I think i need to keep reminding myself that it wasn't meant to be. The chiffon light purple were more than a $100 more and the satin ones everyone kept raving how comfy they are and how they loved the pockets. Am I wrong to keep 2nd guessing myself, or was it simply the right decision for the group of girls in my party? PS!!!! I also thought I was going to fall on the floor when the woman at the bridal salon told me my dress size. mind you I am 5'4'' and 112 pounds and XS or size 0 generally and keep on a strict exercise routine and only eat junkie for 1-2 meals on weekends and immediately after measuring me she was like "ok sounds good a size 6 should do it then"  waaaaaaa i made her show me the size chart to ensure they were not trying to size me up too much to drive up the cost of alterations and low and behold she was pretty close, I was even borderlining on an 8!!! super despressed bride..need some reinforcement please.

  • Do not be depressed about a size. I am a street size 2/4, and my wedding dress was a 6. That's 100% normal. I've been in 2 other weddings, and my bridesmaid dresses were all size 6. You don't need to obsess about a number, because you were the same size leaving the store as you were going in.
Also, we would love to see pics of the dress, and the bridesmaid dresses.
  • The only people that will ever know the size of your dress is you, God, and the bridal store consultant.  I tried to tell the same thing to my friend who had to order a dress almost 6 sizes larger then what she normally wears in street sizes.  She was so freaked out by the number she did what I begged her not to do and ordered a size smaller then what was recommended just so she felt better about the size.

When your dress comes in and you still don't like to see that number then remove the tag.  You have to get the size that fits you best.  Wedding dress sizes are ridicuously off from normal street sizes...you would think designers would want to do it the other way around and size the dresses so that a street size 8 person would have to purchase a size 6 or 4 in a wedding dress...imagine the boost of self-esteem that bride would have.

  • Designers are way off on sizing  - it's partially due to the fact that there was a readjustment of sizes about 60 years ago, and bridal didn't make the switch.  So, you're looking at sizing from the early 1900s, not today.  And women today are shaped much differently.

  • I am usually a street size 14, and my wedding dress was a size 20.  Buy what fits you, not what the tag says.
  • i am normally a size 6-8...my wedding gown is a SIZE 14!!! i was in shock too! but they use your largest measurement and that is my chest size! oh well
  • when I went dress shopping, the place I went separated all gowns into "street sizes" that way you didn't worry about gown size, and rather what YOUR size was. I didn't realize until I got home with my size 6 gown that it was marked something like a size 12. I'm a size 2-4 in tops and 4/6 in jeans.. obviously I am not a size 12. It didn't bother me, though. I know my size and that size is : Whatevertheheckfits!!!
