destination wedding apparel

Hi everybody!  So, my fiance & I are getting married on a beach, August 2011.  We should know which beach within the next few weeks, but possibly somewhere in Mexico, Jamaica, or St. Lucia.  My fiance is convinced that it is normal for the groom and groomsmen to wear khaki shorts to the wedding, b/c it will be on a beach, beach atmosphere, beach temperatures, etc.  I find this really appalling and am not into it at all.  I plan to wear a short wedding dress, not gown.  Thoughts, please?!

Re: destination wedding apparel

  • For destination weddings, I think anything goes.
  • I think he should get to pick what he and the guys should wear and will feel the most comfortable in. I agree that pants would look better, but if he wants shorts and they're nice shorts, I'd let him wear them. If you're wearing a shorter dress (presumably for comfort and to fit the atmosphere?) then why not let him wear shorts? Besides, your wedding is far enough away that you can keep your fingers crossed that he'll change his mind by then.
  • I will definitely be keeping those fingers crossed!!  As far as not wearing a gown, it's because I think it would be fitting & more comfortable as far as getting married on a beach.  It will still be a wedding dress though, I'm not considering any type of sun dress or anything that is not specifically meant for a bride.  Thanks for your feedback!

when i think beach wedding, i automatically think light and comfortable.  i feel like tux's are more of a traditional/formal type thing...but hey thats just me Smile

  • it's whatever you guys want. i think long khaki or light pants would be nicer though.
  • we are getting married in Jamaica and FI is going to wer khakis and a nice white button down shirt and barefoot.  it is perfectly common for guys to wear this for a beach wedding.  I wouldnt do shorts but pants most definately.
I think a Tux or suit might be too hot.

  • I think it is acceptable; however, I would NOT let my man do it.  I personally think that if they want to go casual, khaki slacks would be so much better.

Maybe you two can comprimise.  He wears slacks or suit for the ceremony and dinner and then changes to shorts for the party.
  • I'm glad most of you agree with me :)  Khaki pants and white button-up linen shirt w/no shoes is what I'm pushing for still!
  • I am getting married May 6, 2011 in Cabo.  My FI and I have talked about his attire...and he will wear khaki pants and a white button-up shirt.  (Shorts???  NO WAY!)  We won't go with linen b/c it wrinkles too much......keep in mind pictures!  Good luck!
