All Black Tux

My fiance and his mother, want him in an all black tux like coat, shirt, tie, hankie, pants the hole 9 yards.  Is this going to look too funeral?  I don't know if I like this but I was pretty much over ruled :)  He will have a boutonniere but I just feel it is too much black.  Does anyone have a picture of what this would look like?  Or any suggestions?  They groomsmen will be in a silver vest with a silver tie and I thought maybe he could have some color?  IDK any help would be great!  Thanks in advance.

Re: All Black Tux

  • I think it will look sharp, especially with the bout for a pop of color.
  • Eeep!  That look might need some white to break things up a bit.  How about a white shirt?  That's a much more classic look and would stand the test of time.

The all black look is very trendy and someone (FI? FMIL? you?) might regret that in a few years.  Just ask the guys who wore powder blue tuxedos (perhaps mention that to your FMIL) in the late '70s.  LOL!!  Good luck!

  • He is very adamant about this.. I even read him all of the posts on this subject he doesn't care lol so if he is happy I am happy.  I'll just change his boutonniere to make it pop with color.  Thanks for the help.

  • Traditional tuxes are all black with the exception of the shirt which is white.  See http://www.blacktieguide.com/index.html.

All black is trendy right now and can look nice if done correctly.  Given that a black shirt with a black suit is pretty rare (IMO), I don't think it will look funeral at all (for funerals I think of a black suit with a traditional white button shirt and somber tie) and can actually look really sharp.  A bow tie will also help distinguish it from funeral attire.

In the end, he is a grown man.  Let him wear what he wants.  Its his wedding too.  Besides most people will be looking at you anyway ;).
