Question re: Wedding Bands

I have a platinum engagement ring.  I am thinking of getting a white gold wedding band due to cost and timing.  We've waited so long to order the bands that I'm trying to think about alternatives if a platinum band won't arrive in time.

Does anyone have experience with wearing platinum and gold together?  Would the platinum scratch the gold?  Will they wear differently over time and not look the same in 10, 15, 20 years?  Any info is appreciated.  Thanks!

My friend is pondering the same thing right now and has decided to get a platinum wedding band also.  They're differently wear differently and her jeweler (although I guess this could be BS just to get them to spend more), said that having the two dissimilar metals together will cause them to wear quicker than if they were the same.
  • I am pretty sure that my mom has a white gold engagement ring and a platinum wedding band (or vice versa) that she has worn together since they've been married (over 30 years).  One of the baguettes fell out of her e ring a while ago, but I don't know that that had to do with them being 2 different metals.

My e ring is yellow gold that we had rhodium plated--it's a vintage piece.  I am getting a platinum band, and I'm not that worried.  If it turns out to be a big deal, I'll wear my e ring on my right hand or something.  We got my band from greenkarat.com.  I think it was $325 for a plain platinum band with free fast shipping, but we ordered it last Monday night (as in 5/16) and it hasn't even shipped yet (FI emailed them about it, not sure why it's taking so long).  I was also looking at bands on bluenile.com in the same price range, you might check with them to see how fast you would get it from them.
  • Blue Nile ships amazingly quickly, so if you find a band there you like I definitely recommend it! My fiancé got my engagement ring there, and we had it within a week. When I sent it back for resizing, I was without the ring for only a week. Their customer service was also great.

  • Thanks, everyone!
  • One of my friends has one each of different metals and they do wear differently. The rhodium plating on the white gold will wear off and it will appear more yellow.

My school ring is unplated white gold and my engagement ring is rhodium plated.

See the difference? This is what my engagement ring will look like when the rhodium wears off if I don't get it replated. This will not match the platinum and to me, it's not worth dealing with the upkeep. Get them the same metal. Since both my wedding band and e-ring are white gold if the plating wears off, at least they will match.

The real white gold is really a perfect medium between what we THINK white gold is and yellow gold.
  • White gold is being forced to be white so it will turn yellowish over time and a quick trip to the jeweler for rhodium plating will fix that. Platinum also looks pretty wrecked once it gets a lot of scratches on it and it is more expensive to refinish that so either way there will be upkeep. That is why jewelers offer care plans. I fell walking through my yard today (oops) and caught my ring on a cement stepping stone. Hello scratch! No big.

My band is platium and my engagement ring white gold. I've been wearing them together (unsoldered) for about 9 months now. I think they look fine, I can tell the difference in colour because I know they are diffeent metals but only under certain light, to everyone else they look exactly the same. The colour will probably change a bit over time but all you have to do is replate the gold and repolish the platinum and they'll be good as new.

  • We also pondered over this.  My e ring is platinum, and while we were going to go with white gold for my wedding band, we decided against it.  For an exra $400 we could get the platinum one and the shipping time was the same.  We got both of my rings at JamesAllen.com, a are very very pleased.
