Beach wedding brides shoe help please!

So my wedding ceremony is currently scheduled to be held in a courtyard at the beach, but we also have the option of being directly on the beach, in the sand.
My question is, if I have my ceremony on the sand, does the wedding party have to be barefoot? And if so, which i don't mind, how would I get my dress hemmed so that I don't trip on it when i'm barefoot on the beach but it is still long enough when I go to the reception and put on my shoes with some heel?

Please help me figure out how this works so I can decide if I should have the ceremony on the beach or not.

I am not sure about the shoes thing, but ballet flats, sandles, and wedges are all nice alternatives to heels (since heels would probably be impossible in the sand). As far as your dress goes, if you hem it to your barefoot-self it's going to be too short with heels.  Is your dress full enough that you could add crinoline or something so it's fuller/shorter on the beach and do less crinoline so it's longer with heels?  I don't really know how else it would work with both lengths.  If you wore a short heel, it probably wouldn't look bad an inch or 2 off the ground though.  Totally depends on the style of your dress though...

Check out the foot thongs! They are so pretty for barefoot beach weddings! ;-)  They would make cute gifts for the bridesmaids too!
