White vs. Ivory Dress

Hi ladies- So I think I found my dress. But my mom keeps insisting that I would look better in white than the ivory. All of the bridal consultants I've talked to at the stores are saying that this style of dress (lace overlay) really should be done in ivory because the lace will look "cheap" if its done in the pure white. No store carries the dress in white for me to be able to try on. I'm nervous to order the dress in white and then hating it. But my mom is being insistent on it being white.

Do most brides really go with ivory now? Does anyone have any feedback on a lace dress? Here is a picture of the dress, but I'll be taking the ruffle layer out. Thank you so much!!!

Re: White vs. Ivory Dress

  • white or ivory its all the same to me! haha...but anyways my guess is that the bridal consultants know what they are talking about and you should probably take the safe route and go with their suggestion. Your mom will get over the white vs. ivory thing.

  • If you do it in ivory the lace will probably stand out a little more.  Did you like the dress in white when you tried it on?  Did you like the way the lace looked?  If so, order it in white.  If you thought the lace blended in too much then go with what the consultants said and order it in ivory.  Remember, you're the one wearing the dress, not your mom.

  • white lace dresses do look cheaper, lace shows it's beauty and definition in creamier colors. I personally hate lace dresses in white and on the day people are going to see you in a white dress even if the bridal shop calls it ivory or eggshell or whatever
  • My Dress is Ivory.. My Mom too was thinking I would look better in White but then saw my dress and loved it. I agreed with the PP that it's your day and your dress so go with the one you love. I would advise against ordering the dress without seeing what it would look like in white.
  • The consultants are usually pretty knowledgable, so if they suggest ivory, there's probably a reason for it.  And most people don't really look their best in pure white.  Ivory is usually a better choice, especially if,like me, you're on the paler side.

  • white lace does indeed look cheaper than ivory, eggshell. i look better in white than ivory (after weeks of trying on dresses it was clear). the color of the dress i ordered was called ivory, but it looked like white, and the white they had was diamond white, which is like bleached-teeth white and IMHO does look tacky. just try on a bunch of dresses along the white spectrum and you'll see what shade really does look best on you.
  • I also think white lace can look cheap.  You should wear the dress YOU like in the color you like.  I think a lot of people look better in ivory than in white.

  • I am in the same dilema...except its my fiance that wants me to wear white.  I found my dream dress and it has a lace overlay which only looks good in ivory.  I have tanned skin so the contrast with white against my skin tone is quite dramatic and so I prefer ivory.  Any suggestions on how to deal with a FI who wants me to wear traditional white......when I don't feel comfortable or beautiful in a white dress???
  • Yes, don't get the dress in white. White lace does look really cheap....like dollar store tacky. Go for ivory FOR SURE!! And don't worry, wearing ivory won't even look like ivory. most people will look at you and think you're in white. It's avery subtle difference, but with lace, you need that difference!!
  • I've tried on many lace dresses, some white and some ivory, but the lace does look the best in ivory.  I would go with ivory, and if you agree that you don't like the look of ivory on you, maybe you should explore other options for dresses.  Good luck!
  • My mom also l thought white would be better for me but I liked ivory better and was able to convince my mom when I found my dress. i personally think ivory looks way better if it's a lace dress and agree with the other posters that white lace just looks cheap!

  • Ivory is basically a shade of white.  See if you can try on another lace dress in white, by the same designer if possible.  I preferred my dress in ivory, but based on skin tone.

Posted by kiranandgary[/QUOTE] tell him that you fell beautiful in ivory & that you think white does not compliment your skin tone. but if he goes shopping w/ you you could show him the diffrence.
  • Contact the designer of the gown and see when there is an upcoming trunk show.  If there is a trunk show remotely close to you, contact that shop and make an appointment.  Request that the designer bring that dress in the color you want.  Since they will be doing a trunk show, you won't have to pay for the shipping of the dress to try on.  Any other time, you'll have to pay a charge to have the dress shipped to the bridal salon just to try on.  I did this with Watters.  No salons close to me had the dresses I liked.  I went to a trunk show (130 miles away).  The shop owner requested every single dress I wanted to see (25 different dresses!).  I tried on every dress and it didn't cost me a dime.
  • I insisted on getting a white dress...until I put one on. I liked the white but it just didnt look right. My dress I first tried on in white and was unsure if I wanted the ivory or not. I went to a different store and saw it in ivory and I feel in love. The beading of my dress looks so much better in ivory. I was also told by many people that ivory photographs better. I definitely think ivory looks "richer" especially with lace. I may be a little bias since my dress is ivory but it looked so much better in ivory.
