Budget for Alterations?

okay, so I still have a little bit of time before i go dress shopping, but I am looking around.  I want to try to come up with a budget for my dress, but i dont want it to be my ultimate budget since I'm pretty sure I will need to get it altered.
I have never gotten anything altered before, about how much should I be budgeting for alterations?

Thanks!

That all depends on where you shop.  I've heard brides complain about the high prices that David's Bridal charges for alterations, while the boutique where I'm getting my dress alterations charges max out at $75.  I'd just ask the boutique or shop where you are buying your gown.  If it sounds too high then try to find someone independent to do it.

Mine were $300. I have a full ball gown so that may have affected the price.  I had a  hem. bustle, taken in at the sides and a strap tightened. Believe it or not that was cheap because the salon wanted $600.

EDIT: I forgot I got cups added.

  • I need my dress taken in at the bust, a bustle added and the hemline done. I've put $300 in the budget but I'm hoping it's less than that.

Shop around before you firm up who you're going to use.

  • It really all depends on the type of dress you buy and how well it fits when it comes in.  All I needed for my dress was the hem, the back of the one shoulder strap moved to the other side (because I liked the look better) and a two point bustle...I went through the boutique I bought my dress at and it cost me about $116

  • I went through the boutique where I got my dress and it was just under $150 to bustle the skirt and overlay, take a nip under the arms, hem the dress, and create a new panel to go under the corset laces in the back (I purchased the dress off the rack and the panel was missing).  When you try on dresses the associates should be able to give you ideas about what kind of alterations you would need and rough idea of the price.  However, alterations are definitely something you can call around for to different seamstresses and see if someone will give you a better price, or there may be some alterations you or a friend or family member can do yourself to save money.

    I had...

    - cups put in my dress
    - bust taken in slightly
    - twenty point bustle added <--- that's ridic.

Grand total $250 - HOWEVER!  My seamstress charged $10 a point for the bustle.  Normal bustles are 2-3 points (so $20-$30).  My bustle was $200 because I wanted this involved bustle.

I used my bridal salon for alterations.
  • I only needed a bustle (yay for corset backs and being tall).  But since my bustle was 9 points it ran me $90 ($10 a point).  She also included steaming/pressing in the price.
