alterations questions with a month to go..***update***

Original Post:  I got my dress hemmed a while back and when I went to pick it up, I found that I was stepping on the front of it.  I brought it to the attention of the seamstress and she told me it was fine that I just needed to kick while I walk to make room for my feet because of all the fabric under the dress.  I mentioned this at my shower this weekend and everyone said that was not right and I should take it back.  My questions are these:  has anyone else had this experience and do you think David's Bridal will charge me again for the hemming?  Thanks ladies!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               ***Update***  I called DB this morning and spoke with the store manager.  I told her what the seamstress said about kicking as I walk and she said that it was absolutely wrong and that she was very upset someone told me that rather than fixing the dress.  She invited me to come in when she and the alterations manager would be in so they could make sure the dress was hemmed properly this time...without charging me again.  I was SO relieved!!  Thank you ladies for helping me on this one!

  • It's Davids, and their alterations suck...so yes, they'll charge you.  I'd fight it though.  Now, when you're kicking it...are you wearing anything new?  A different slip?  New undergarments?  Shoes?  I'd agree that you should get this fixed....
  • I have a DB's dress... and I found that without a slip, it gets tucked up between my legs and I trip on it.  But with a slip with a bit of pouf, it fixes the problem.

I would get it fixed... You don't want to kick your dress out while you walk down the aisle, have your first dance, etc!

  • You shouldn't be stepping on the front of your dress, nor should you have to "kick"

I would take your dress in to a different, reputable seamstress and get their opinion. Likely this can be fixed by taking it up a bit more or getting more tulle put on the bottom on the inside.

  • Just to clarify a few things, I do have a slip with tulle at the bottom.  I'm wondering if the problem is because she took the bottom of the slip, and therefore a good bit of the tulle up because I'm so short and the missing poof at the bottom made the difference.  If tulle will help, that's an alteration I can do myself.  I'm just worried that it won't get done in time if I take it back there...my wedding is March 31st.
  • To avoid stepping on the dress, my seamstress added a small amount of tulle under the skirt in the front.  It was a minor alteration and helped walking tremendously.  Take it to an independent seamstress and they will fix the problem.

All my alterations were done (taken in at chest, cups added, bustle, and extra tulle) with less than one month to go - you have time!
  • You have time for the alterations, and in no way should you ever have to kick your dress out to keep from stepping on it.  I would argue with DB about having it redone or refunding your alterations costs so you can go somewhere else.
