Lace Veil with non-lace dress

Ok so I'm having a dilema, I found the perfect wedding dress and now I'm having a hard time finding a veil. I was thinking about wearing my moms but hers is really white and I'm afraid would clash with my ivory dress. My finance recently found his mothers (who passed away in 2001) veil that has a beautiful lace trim around the edge. There are just a few problems with it, it's attached to a juilet cap, which isn't that big of a deal because i can just snip the few stiches that are attaching the two, but besides that the lace is coming up off of the tulle. Is there anyway to fix this? And i'm afraid the lace will not look good with my dramatic dress. Suggestions Comments please?

This is my dress. The veil im wearing is just one from the store, not my moms or my fiances moms

And this is his mothers veil. Sorry for the darkness of the photo!

Re: Lace Veil with non-lace dress

  • I don't know what to tell you about fixing the veil, but I do think you can wear a lace-edge veil with a non-lace dress.  I've seen other girls do that and it looks lovely.
  • Hi!
That lace veil is breathtaking.  I think that would be very meaningful to wear it.

I had 2 family veils restored into one: my grandmother's and my mom's.  My grandmother's veil is over 80 yrs old, the silk lace was in great shape but the tulle would crumble at the touch.  My mom's silk tulle was in great shape, but she also had a juliet cap.  I found a GOOD seamstress who specializes in restoration and bridal wear.  She took all the pieces apart by hand, hand-washed all the material in peroxide and water to brighten up the color, and then she hand-stitched my grandmother's lace onto my mom's veil, and attached the entire thing onto a comb to give me the shape I wanted.  It was expensive, but worth it to create a family heirloom.

FWIW I don't think my dress and veil "match" either, but I'm okay with that.  The veil is sentimental, and everybody knows the story.  Plus it's coming off the second the ceremony is over and going back into its special bag.  :)  Here's my dress.

and my veil looks like this:
  • Arrabelle,

Your dress and veil are both so gorgeous! I feel better knowing their are other brides whose veils dont match perfectly, and other brides who are wearing more traditional lace veils with contemporary dresses!

i too am planning taking the long veil off right after the ceremony, but im replacing it with a bridcage veil made out of the extra lace left by the juliet cap! :)

  • Thanks!  Yours are gorgeous too.

Great idea about the birdcage veil.  I might make a little fascinator or comb out of some beads and wax flowers that came from my Oma's veil.

My seamstress also suggested saving the juliet cap and possibly recycling it with leftover tulle as a 1st communion veil someday.  FI's family is catholic and we have 2 nieces.  I thought that might be a nice way to blend our family heirlooms.

    Good luck!
  • I used a lace veil with a non-lace dress and it actually complemented the dress.  I actually think that you need to be careful about wearing a lace veil with a lace dress.  It can sometimes look like way too much lace.
  • Well what’s wrong with the lace......The lace is really beautiful and you can wear this with your dress.....Let me tell you that your dress is really really beautiful.......And if his mother’s veil is going perfectly with your dress then I guess this lace will look beautiful too with your dress........

And if you want to fix it then search a good tailor and ask him/her to fix it.......Do not try yourself if you do not know how to do it.....
