Idiot Bride Ordered the Wrong Color...

That idiot bride would be me.  So first off, I took the risk of ordering a dress online from China.  How did that go?!  Great!!!  After 30 days of a very uneasy stomach, I saw photos of my custom designed, custom cut, one-of-a-kind lace dress.  I was so excited that I was able to save the money (I paid $400 plus a PayPal fee) but I then had an uneasy stomach over a whole new issue.

I ordered an ivory dress.  It was made in ivory, the color I told him I wanted it.  Unfortunately, what I had in mind was between white and champagne, which I thought would be more beige, since I thought that champagne would be a bit too dark.

I'm really upset with myself because of everything, the one thing that isn't going well is something I could've controlled.  Lesson: Always order a fabric swatch!

So my question for my fellow brides: Do I just talk myself into loving it?  My colors are navy and gold/champagne (Maybe I just need a lesson in colors) and I was hoping for an antiqued lace look.  My skin tone is olive, I'm brunette. I just feel that white (and ivory) are too stark.  In my insomnia over it last night, I seriously considered having the makers send me my left over fabric and I would try tea-dyeing it.  Help!  I'm so in Bridezilla mental space and don't want to be.

If you can give me the pros of ivory
or
thoughts/recommendations for what I should do, I'd love the advice.

Thank you!!

My dress is ivory and as far as how "stark" it looks, it has a bit of an antique coloring compared to the bright whites.  In fact, my "ivory" dress matches the same white that my mom's dress is, and hers wasn't quite a stark white back in the 70's.  Your dress doesn't HAVE to be champagne in order to match the color scheme.  Maybe complement it with some champagne color shoes, and a champagne veil and gold jewelry.  You might even add a champagne satin belt or a blinged-out belt to give the champagne vibe to your gown.

Try not to panic yet... until it comes.  If you end up not being able to work with the color of the gown, maybe you can talk with the company about an exchange?  I've not heard good things about returns with the chinese wedding dress companies, but definitely read the return policy on the company and see what you can do.

If you reach the conclusion that your dress isn't okay, check your budget... if you have room to order another dress, start checking the wedding dress pre-owned sites to see if you can find what you want for less.

Wishing you the best of luck with your dress!! :-)

  • Is there any way we can see a pic? I lost you there a little bit and I am not sure what color you actually ended up with. Is it too dark or too light? Also, consider that you wont know what it actually looks like until it arrives; pictures can be deceiving.

On another note, I really appreciate the fact that you are not blaming them, it would be really easy to come on here and say things like, "the shop messed it up" "this is not the color I ordered" (which happens sometimes in real life, I know). I think the good karma you are working up by being honest about an honest problem will benefit you in this situation! Hope it works out!

  • I had an ivory dress and I'm a brunette with olive skin tone.  Although every designer's ivory is different, I don't think the color is too off form white.  Can you show us a picture of your dress (preferably with you in it)?

  • You will look beatiful, try not to stress too much over it.  I have an ivory dress, brunette and have olive skin as well, and the ivory color compliments my skin tone very well.
  • I'm confused too.  Are you thinking the dress is going to be too light?  Because if that is the case, it may look darker in person than in the photos.  My daughter had an oyster color dress for her wedding, and in the photographs it looks much lighter - more like champagne.  Good luck - I hope you love it when it comes.

  • I also ordered ivory from China. Also brunette. I like it. It reminds me of seasoned pearls, or an actual vintage dress. Quite what I hoped.

The champagne or gold sash sounds nice though too.

  • I'm a brunette too .. black hair actually and olive skin .. I just bought/ordered my dress from a dress shop. It's ivory and I love the color. My colors are also going to be blue for my bridesmaids and a darker red (like a delicious apple color) for my MOH. I the the ivory will look great. Besides .. you will be dazzling regardless of what the dress color is because it's your special day!. :)

  • I agree you will be beautiful especially since you love the dress just worried about the color.  I am brunette and my dress is ivory.

I say start loving your dress since it is what you wanted minus a difference in color but not a bad one :)

  • I think you are going to look beautiful. Your beautiful skin tone and that you beautiful hair. I think you will be surpurised to see that the ivory will look good on you. I would really keep it and keep your mind open. Also, remember it isn't about all that other stuff. You will look amazing wearing a t-shirt. I know you are worried about it but, really I think you are way to hard on yourself. I sell wedding dresses, trust me I know..lol
  • CMGr makes a good point. Worrying about it right now won't do any good.

Odds are, even if it isn't quite the color you wanted, it will still look fine on you. Colors in pictures on computer monitors are never accurate, anyway.
  • Ivory is one of those colors that should look good on MOST ladies.  I am sure you will be fine, dark hair and olive skin tone speak for themselves!  I think the ivory should help that pop, its a beautiful combination that will contrast with your pretty complexion  :-)  I would be purchasing an ivory dress myself, but its the only rule my fiance has (we were watching bride wars and he said he really wants me to wear a bright white dress... not sure where that came from but hey, hes the one whos breath im trying to take away!)

And if you don't physically have it in your hands, then try to calm your nerves because pictures/screens can be WAY off when it comes to true color.
