Cake vent

I would kill to have a wedding planner right now. Someone to take care of everything. I'm so frustrated with all the work! We went to see a baker today. Actually what I thought was going to be THE baker. Their skills are amazing and I've been told by everyone they're super professional. Plus I emailed them a while ago asking about their average prices and they wrote me back with a lovely email and said $2.50. So I figured okay they're probably lying and it's around $3. NOT true. She's charging us $3.50 per slice (VERY expensive around here) and not even because of the design!

We want that flower petal design, and just for that she's charging us $80 which I think is totally acceptable. So the intricate design is costing $80 right? What the hell is in the cake that it has to cost $3.50 alone? Adding up everything else, we were looking at a $500 something dollar cake for 80 people. That costs more than my dress... not happening.

So I'm pretty upset and now I have to go through the tedious work of finding another baker. And the difficult thing about planning here is that very few things are online. Any vendor with a website is because they're very expensive. Meaning I have to work extra hard to find out where the reasonably priced but  good vendors are. And then I start thinking what if after all I'll just have to find a different design that's more affordable... meaning I'll have to go through the looong process of finding another cake we BOTH like. Basically I brokedown (it's my week, what can I say.. not to mention there's a billion other to do's I have pending) and FI said he'd take care of the cake research. Though I'm not sure I can count on that.. that's what he said about the photog. He's very forgetful when it comes to wedding stuff. But whatever, we'll see. I'm just tired of doing everything alone with very little resources to help me out. Bahh! Why aren't wedding planners free?! lol

Re: Cake vent

  • I think it sounds like she's trying to milk you.  I think one could do a 3 tiered smaller scale!  I think they are called cake dummies?
  • Geez that's ridiculous!! We talked to some bakers and that is easily what they wanted to charge us per slice, if not more!! But I live in an expensive area and I'm not terribly far from Boston which weddings there are even more expensive.  I think she's trying to get more money for herself and I think she needs to down scale to 3 tier if you want or charge you less for the cake dummies.

  • I agree completely. Obviously if she's trying to copy a 4 tiered cake for 80 people, that's going to need cake dummies (thanks for the name guys haha!) But I don't need it to be 4 tiered. Gah it was so annoying how much she went on about the "importance" of that because of the design! Just scale the frickin flower down biotch! LOL She was more annoying than I expected, there are several bakers there, I'd kinda like to ask to work with someone else..!

Thanks guys, that's why I love coming here. I realized I could def call her back and ask for her to take out the dummies and take another look at what she's really charging me aside from the design. Sometimes we just get so upset you don't see the obvious solutions right in front of you haha! :)

  • If there are any culinary schools nearby, you might be able to get a pastry chef apprentice/student to do a cake for you at a lesser charge. It's good practice for them and could save you some $$. Sorry to hear you are having problems :-/ That is pretty ridic that her email said one thing and she told you another. Best of luck!

  • Nati, we have the same cake!!! I'm so sorry about all the trouble it's causing you, though :( I wish you were local so that you could use my wedding coordinator - she is FABULOUS and takes care of all my meltdowns, haha.

  • OHHH!! I love the culinary school idea!! That would be awesome!!  My brother's school did that and their cakes turned out awesome!

Also, I forgot to put that $3.50 is on the expensive side in my area here as well.  But their work and the taste of the cakes/fillings are amazing!!  But, I too have to be comfortable with whom I'm working with...There has to be a connection with all of my vendors, or it won't work....

    The price is outrageous.

Our cake is for 75 people. Includes custom design, the cake board, delivary and is only about 300 dollars. Sheesh.

[QUOTE]Nati, I found your scale scaled down cake!  Totally doable! If that's an 8" and 10" it serves 60, if it's an 8" and 12" it serves 70.  I am not sure what she charges for this cake but I'm sure it's $200 or less.
