french tips or painted nails?

I keep going back and forth about this. I get married this Saturday (St Paddys Day) and I dont really do the whole fake nail french tip thing anymore but my FI insists that thats what I should do. I dont really want them 1. because I dont feel like anyone does that anymore and 2. because I dont have the money to keep up with them after the wedding. I know some may say "just rip them off" but Ive never been able to get those puppies off my nails. I alwasy have to wait for them to grow out and then I cut them off.
I was thinking painted. Maybe white or a really dark green. What do you gals think?
Do people still do the french tip thing? LOL

  • Painted, but with the french manicure! lol.

I agree that getting full on acrylics is a bad idea if you don't already do it anyway (and ripping them off is a TERRIBLE idea.) but the look of a french manicure is pretty much timeless. That's likely what I'll be doing.

BUT, it's certainly an opportunity for you to do something fun and creative, so if that's your style... I say go for it!

  • It's sweet that your fiance has a preference, but I personally will just paint mine.  I have never done french tips and it's just not me.  It's hard enough for me to keep nail polish from chipping.  I recommend you pain one of the colors of your wedding.

  • I would just paint them and go with something simple like "bubble bath" from OPI.

  • I'd either get them painted with French tip (no acrylic) or paint a nice pink/beige neutral. There's nothing more timeless than that.
  • I would either paint them a soft pretty color or paint french or american tips if they are long enough.  I wouldn't do fake nails if you don't do them regularly and if you do get them done, go back to the nail salon and have them soaked off - don't rip them off.

  • Just have a french manicure, no acrylics. Or a pale pink/nude. Essie has a lot of great colors in those shades. Ballet Slippers is my favorite by them. OPI's Pinking of You and Bubble Bath are good, too.

I think you'd regret having dark green nails, even for a St. Patrick's day wedding. At least, I would.
  • French tips are out. Very tacky. Like PP try Essie Ballet Slippers! My fav!

Go with your "gut", if you don't want tips, don't get them.

Personally I would stray away from a dark colored nail polish, just go for a simple manicure with an light/neutral polish which will be timeless.

And the whole French tip thing is still HUGE in the NY/NJ area.
  • Thanks girls! A light pink was another idea so I will def lean more that way I think. I am all about the no-chip manicures now so that's what I'd prefer to stick with :O)

  • I painted my own nails the day of my wedding.  I used "who needs a prince" by OPI.
  • I agree, just have a french manicure done on your real nails.

  • Yes gel nails rock! So close dress twin! I'd go with a very light shade so they aren't distracting from your whole look. :)
  • I'm doing what PP said-- a light pink shellac on my nails. If you don't want to do shellac there is "ballet slipper" by OPI which is a pale pink or "princesses rule!" by OPI which is a pale pink with sparkles!

  • I wore dark purple shellac and I don't regret it for a moment.  I think it looked awesome, doesn't stand out (unless it's a pic of my hands) and I loved that it was different than the norm.

  • I got a french manicure and pedicure for our wedding, but on my real nails. I haven't done acrylic in years and will probably never do it again. It's a dated look that hopefully has gone away for good as it's very damaging to your nails and it takes forever to grow them back out.

I voted for painting them with a color, but I like natural nails with a french manicure for your wedding day. HTH!

  • I love the nude look. I am going to use the OPI color Mimosas for Mr and Mrs and just have them painted. Simple and timeless. :)
  • I highly recommend Shellac.  It looks nice and shinny and has minimal damage to your nails.  You can take it off by soaking your nails in acetone nail polish as well.

As for color, I would go for the emerald green.  Jewel shades are beautiful and it will look great for St. Patricks Day.  I am contemplating getting either french or hot pink Shellac myself.

I'm just getting a regular french manicure. I wouldn't get painted ones, because I am notorious for getting nervous, bored, stressed, etc. and scratching off my polish.
  • Paint them a sheer deleicate pink, and let the white of your natural nails create the most subtle, natural nearly-fresh-tip look. :)

You can use Essie's pale colors like Ballet Slippers for this if you use thin coats.
