BM Dress Blunder

Hi Ladies,

I recently had my BM's try on their dresses as they just got shipped from the retailer.  Here is the thing... When 2 of them tried their dresses on, the dresses were too small.  Too small as they could not zipper the back.  I ordered through House of Brides.com and they state that they don't allow returns or exchanges.

The BM's with the smaller dresses gave me these specific dress sizes to order from the site.  They tried on a size larger (than what they ordered) at the bridal shop and they stated they were swimming in it.  So they asked me to go with the smaller size.

Since I am not the one that made the mistake, I am definitely not going to pay anything for this mess up.  I need help though with what to tell them.  What can they do to make the dress bigger?  One of the BM's is a size 4 and can't really lose much weight.  The other is a size 20 and is getting married this year as well.  Not sure if she plans to lose some weight though.

Anywho... I guess what I am asking is, what kind of options are out there to make dresses bigger and not break the bank too much.... considering they already bought one dress.

Let me know your thoughts.

Re: BM Dress Blunder

  • That is frustrating! House of Brides is known to order the wrong size, so did you double check that the size the girls asked for was ordered? As for making those dresses fit better, BM dresses often have a bit of extra fabric at the seams that can be let out. Another option is spanx. It could help hold everything in just enough for the zipper to slide a bit better. If they chose to order a smaller size, then it's really not your fault.

  • Can they zip them at all?  If they can get them zipped at least I am sure they can be let out a bit to fit.

Tell them to take the dresses to good tailors near them and see what can be done. The tailors can either let them out or maybe put in some panels (perhaps from a matching shawl, some spare fabric purchased from the manufacturer, or buy a used dress in the same designer/color/fabric off eBay and cut it up for scrap).

Or look on eBay for used dresses in their correct sizes. If they can't find the exact same style, maybe they could wear slightly different styles in the same designer/color/fabric/skirt length.

  • My mother is a seamstress and has seen this many times! she installs a lace up (similar to wedding dresses) along the back, can add up to 3 extra inches and looks extra special! you could even get creative and use a different colour for the laces. Smile
  • Thanks everyone!  I appreciate your advice.  I think I am going to have them order more fabric and have them find a seamstress who can take it out for them.
