Black dresses...how to add color?

My girls are wearing black knee length dresses from Target!  Yay for $40!  http://www.target.com/dp/B001DYNE32/ref=cm_reviews_pg2?ie=UTF8&sortReviews=-votes&page=2&activetab=Reviews

I really want to add some color.  How should I do it?  Our wedding is not very formal, so I don't like the satin sashes.  Too much shine and I can't seem to find any less formal ones.  I would like to stick with them picking their own black shoes so they can wear them again.  What about a hair flower?  Is it too much for them to wear a flower if I plan to wear a white one for the reception?

Our colors are fuschia, orange and green.

Re: Black dresses...how to add color?

  • I really like the ribbon idea!  Thanks!

  • Maybe a lace insert sewn into the V neckline in a color to match the sash you choose?

Instead of a shawl, you could go with a short or long sleeved shrug in either black, or a color to match whatever else you decide to do

    Good luck.
  • non satin sashes, ribbon, brooches, flowers, hair flowers, just be creative.

  • A sash or maybe a colorful broch on the side hip. Also flowers will bring colors. Jewerly will help as well.
  • Depending on what time of the year, a really colorful scarf, headband, or jewelry could work.  Just depends on your taste!
  • The wedding is in late August.  I really wanted to do green cardigans, but it will be too hot :(  The flowers will be very bright so that will help a lot.  I think I'm going to go with green ribbon!  The guys are wearing tan suits with green ties.  I just hope I can find a fabric for the ribbon that looks good!  I saw that davids bridal has a satin ribbon...not sure how it will look with the cotton dress.

  • WE have the same colors! I'm doing black and white with bold accents of fuchsia, orange and lime green.  My girls are wearing their own black dresses.  I bought them all fuchsia pashminas from Target that are really nice.  They are going to be carrying orange flowers.   Hope that helps :)

  • Thank you for the Target dress link!  I'm going to have my girls in black cocktail dresses, but haven't decided on which yet. This is a great one! Definitely something to think about.
  • Our colors are black, white, and lime and the bm are wearing black dresses. I am considering doing a fabric flower pinned to the side of the waist of the dress.

  • You could ask them to do their best to add fuschia, orange or green to their outfits, whether that be a sash, pashmina, shoes, jewelry or hair accessory.  I can't remember where I've seen pictures of that before, possibly snippetandink, but it gives a very fun and somewhat eclectic vibe.
  • Would you consider bright colored shoes?  Let them choose what they want.  I think that would be adorable.

  • My girls are also wearing black. Our colors are black/white so the color will come into play with the girls' jewelry and flowers. I am making both, so each girl's jewelry and flowers will be in their favorite color.  So one pink, one green, and one blue/purple.

  • You could do a bright fuschia colored flower in their hair, some fun orange jewelry, and some adorable green shoes. If your dress is the traditional floor length gown you could even wear green shoes to match your girls for a fun little twist : p
  • My girls are going to have green ribbon sashes with their black dresses. If you and they don't like ribbons consider getting someone crafty to sew some small colored beading in the dress or small bows, etc. And I like the colored jewlery idea, as well as colorful shoes!
  • I had an Etsy seller, hARTjewelry, make custom red and purple flower pins for the bridesmaids' hair or waist band:

She made 6 of them for about $55, I highly recommend her!  I'm also buying the ladies purple shoes from David's Bridal, they are dye-able in a ton of colors:
