dress shopping

so... we just moved out date up, and it's a little less than a year out. i'm planning to wait another month or so before i go dress shopping. since i've never had an idea of a "dream" dress or style, i was planning to take my sister (maid of honor) and a bridesmaid and have a preliminary try-on, with the idea that i wouldn't be shopping for "the" dress, but just getting ideas. has anyone done this?

Re: dress shopping

  • Yes, I think it is very good idea. Also, I would try to browse the internet and/or some books prior to going so you can see what different styles of gowns, etc there are out there. Familiarize yourself with some of the terminology of the gowns (ie: sweetheart neckline, full ball gown, mermaid style, etc) unless you already are knowledgeable. I had no clue when I first when so I read up on few things before hand. Good luck and have fun!
  • I wouldn't be against buying from the get-go.  Some people find a dress and just know it's the one.  If you get the teary-eyes and that "the one" feeling, I see no need to continue shopping.  I would hate for you to find a dress only to go back 3 months later and it not be available anymore.

  • Sure, it's a good idea. You may even find THE dress, in which case there's nothing wrong with buying now!

Just be careful - even if you only intend to try stuff on just to get ideas, don't try on anything above your budget. Otherwise you might fall in love with something you can't have.

  • I did that too and ended up finding my dress on the first trip out.  I didn't purchase it right away because I wanted to make sure that was the dress I wanted.  Don't rule out dresses just because it's your first time.  You can always go back.
