Rant: The dress doesn't fit at all

So I just finally got to try on my dress for the first time since I bought it.  My friend picked it up for me because I live in another state.  I had to try on a size 6 in the store because that's all they had, and they sized me to a 4 so I ordered it.  It's way too big.  I don't even know if it's possible for a no-busty lady like myself to wear this dress.  I'm so mad! and now I'm having the "I don't even like this dress, why did I waste my money on it" feeling and want to cry.

I'm going up to DB when they open to talk to them about it.  I wasn't going to go through them with alterations because they're so over-priced.  But again, I don't even see how this dress is ever suppose to fit.  It's an empire waist dress and as soon as I exhale the "empire" part falls to my actual waist.

The dress:

Any tips before I go up there to talk them?

  • Don't let them talk you into getting alterations done there!  They will charge you an arm and a leg to fix their mistake.  Tell them that this is the size they suggested and now you need a new dress in the proper size ASAP (and not one off the rack).  Stand your ground because they are going to try to tell you they will fix it with alterations and you'll end up paying them $600 to fix your oversized dress.

  • Thank you! I'm such a timid person and I hate "raising cane," but it has to be done.  I will stand my ground!  I only paid $400 for the dress in the first place and I refuse to pay outlandish alterations.

I know they're going to tell me all about how I signed an agreement that all purchases are final.

Ugh this going to be a nightmare.  I can feel it!

  • Aren't they the ones that told you the size you needed since they didn't have the proper size for you to try on?  I see this as their mistake.  I understand not wanting to raise cane because I'm the same way but when it comes to having to spend more money, I'll let them have it!

Did they make you sign some sort of sizing agreement when you ordered it? (with mine they took my measurements and then showed me a chart of the measurements for each size, *didn't get mine from DB though) If so, you may not be able to argue that they suggested the wrong size...though what have you got to lose?

For what it's worth, I looked at the dress and I think it's gorgeous. Smile
  • I love your dress and almost bought it for myself! As a matter of fact another bride trying on dresses while I was there, did buy that dress.  Definitely go and ask if they can order it in a smaller size. It is not your fault they suggested the wrong size. When I ordered my dress from DB, I don't remember signing any agreement or anything. My dress came if really fast too and thankfully fit perfect.
    GL, hope all works out.
  • At DB, when you sign your credit card slip, there is also an agreement on there.  At least there was when I went there for a BM dress.  If DB tells you they can't exchange it for the right size, definitely go to your local board to find a seamstress that will do it for less money.  Don't do it at DB, they are uberexpensive.

  •  A friend of mine got her dress from DB and they said they would exchange it for a different size up to so many weeks after she got it. I'm not sure how long it was but its worth a shot.
  • Thanks ladies! I did go up there and the very rude alterations lady said that the next size down would probably be just a bit too small.  I'm still not going to go through them because she estimated $300 for alterations and I only paid $400 for it to begin with.

I will definitely post about seamstresses on my local board.  Thank you!!
  • Did you try the dress on in the smaller size?  You should see if you can wear dresses in the next size, the lady could be lieing but so you can pay for alerations.
  • I'm getting that dress on Saturday! I tried it on with my MIL and loved it. I went to another DB in NY so my mom could see it, and she loved it too. Now i am going back to my local DB to order it. My future niece is wearing the flower girl dress too. So cute! I am glad to hear that others like it too, and hope I don't have the same problems you had. :(

  • I had the same issue at DB but they made a notation when I bought it.  Because they didn't have my size, when I went to pick it up they had me try it on.  It was too big so they sent it back for a different size.  Worked out fine.
