Fabric for BM dresses?

I have 3 BMs.  Only one of them lives locally.  One lives on the opposite end of the country, the other lives overseas in the UK.  I am wanting them to wear black because it's reasonably easy to come by, everyone needs (or has) a little black dress, so it should be something they can wear again, and it looks good on pretty much everyone.

My question is this:  My FSIL said that it's probably best to have them wear the same type of fabric (so we don't have a really shiny one, and a more matte one, which could look weird in pictures.)  I know nothing about fabric and dresses, so I'm totally stuck trying to figure out what type of fabric to have the girls wear.

We're getting married in August in a church in Vancouver (so not super hot, but still summery.)  The reception is at a golf and country club in an indoor/outdoor area (has both) in the evening.   I want whatever fabric to be easily available and comfortable.  I'm really interested in having the dress they choose be something that they can wear to other things, so hopefully the fabric would be one that wouldn't be odd in a dress that is worn in daily life.

Thanks so much for your help!

Re: Fabric for BM dresses?

  • In my experience dresses in chiffon and taffeta are hardly ever worn again. So maybe stay away from those fabrics? Something like satin, lace, jersey, etc. might be easier to pull off at another occasion.

  • I think satin would be lovely and dressy enough for your wedding but definetly doable for future wear. All of the pictures below are available in Black Satin from David Bridal's website in the outlet section for under $60.00 if they do need to purchase one this would be a reasonable option! Some are as low as $29.00! Charmeuse would be a good option as well or could even mix with satin its got the same sheen to the fabric. Hope this helps:)
