Is this dress ugly?

I went dress shopping for the first time right before Christmas, and found so many beautiful dresses! I haven't decided on THE ONE just yet, but my mind keeps going back to a certain dress.

I intented on getting something more fitted (not ball gown), but I wanted the bottom to be flowy - I love organza layers, etc. So, I saw this dress right when I walked into David's Bridal and just HAD to try it on (J9869). Pictures:

Nobody (friends & family) is saying anything BAD about the dress, they just don't think it's "me" and prefer something like this (which I also love):

So, my question... does the ball gown look okay on me? It's not what I intended to like, but I adore it! I just don't want to regret it since it's not what I originally had in mind.

Re: Is this dress ugly?

• Are you kidding!? The ball gown looks great on you (as does the other one). They are both beautiful dresses and you will be gorgeous on your wedding day no matter what. (Maybe not the most helpful advice, but true....) I would say just go with your gut on this one!
• I think the ballgown dress is beautiful however if you are having doubts I would look around some more. being upset over thinking you have picked the wrong dress is the worst.

• It's a pretty dress, but I feel that it's way too much skirt for you. The skirt starts flaring out too high on your body and you look a little bit like just a head & arms sticking out of a dress.

The other dress is a bit blah for me. I'd love to see you in something in the middle - more of a dropped waist than the first dress, but with more flare than the second dress.

• I like them both but the ballgown definitely wins in my eyes. It is more bridal whereas the other one is way too plain for my taste.

WIth that being said, keep looking around until you find one that you KNOW is the one. If this means going to a different store or bringing different shopping companions, go for it. You only get to do this once.
• both look great on you. the ballgown is NMS, so I'd pick the second dress between the two, but that's just me.

ditto PP that if you're having doubts now, you should probably keep looking.

• Thanks ladies! I'm definitely going dress shopping again soon (hopefully this weekend) so that I can try the dress on again and many many others. :)
• I love the first dress... I think its fun because of the ruffles... but I think you need a droped waist. I feel like the waist line is too high on you. But you do look gorgeous!

Do you like the ruffles/layers? or do you mainly like the dress for being a ball gown?
• oh... thats not ruffley is it...lol. sorry. I meant layers. Somehow I remember it different.

Excuse my blond moment.

I like the ruffles & layers. :) I never thought I'd like a ball gown... they're not really my taste... until this one.
• well... it's the complete opposite of ugly... and it looks great on you. You should always do what you want, and if you love this dress, don't let anyone tell you otherwise... but if you want my oppinion...

I would like to see you in something like that dress with a lower waist line... your slender and I don't feel like this dress puts you at your full bridal potential. ( I hope that made sense). But thats my own oppinion and it could be wrong.

By the way, I'm getting a ruffle/layer dress too! When I tried on my first ruffle dress on, I was extremely happy... more so than any other dress. Thats when I knew I had to have ruffles.
• I don't think #1 is ugly at all! I like the flowy/organza layers concept for a dress. BUT, I think the waistline on #1 is way too high. The ruffles seem to start too close to your waist where it should be more fitted, in my opinion.

This MS isn't exactly what you were looking for, but it shows the "poofy" part of the dress flaring out around the model's hips instead of around her waist.

• I think they are both pretty. I would like to see you in a ballgown style with a sweetheart neckline. I think you can do better (they are both nice, but you are going to look great in a lot of dresses) Keep shopping. If one of those are the one, you will find out soon enough.
• Thanks everyone!!! I agree with many of you... I think the dress is gorgeous - and I'm slightly obsessed with it - but I don't think it's MY dress. I wanted more of a drop-waist trumpet style, and they did look really good on me (like the one below that I love)... I just need to try on MORE. Smile Thanks again!!!

• Well I think you look great in both dresses. If I had to pick between just the 2, I would pick the 2nd dress. That said, I agree w/pp that if you are not sure, then keep looking.
• The first one is pretty, but IMO it makes you look "young." If that makes sense. You look nice in it, but I feel like it's very "princess-ey."

I think you look svelte and sophisticated in the second one, but it's also very plain. Nothing about it stands out for me. It flatters your figure well, and you could always go with very blingy jewelry and an elaborate veil/headpiece to add some pop.

I REALLY like the third one on you. The shape works well for your figure, and the beading adds interest.

But like PPs said, YOU have to like it. I don't think you'd go wrong choosing any one of these three, but if you're not nuts about it then don't get it. Keep looking!

• I LOVE the fit-and-flare silhouette on you, and that last dress looks great. How about this one from Alfred Angelo?

ring_pop: I tried that one (because it looks gorgeous there, yes?)... but it was awful! The top is just not flattering on normal people, apparently, haha. Here's the picture to prove it:

http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad118/jenwedding/Dress4_1.jpg

I did, of course, love the bottom though! ...

http://i927.photobucket.com/albums/ad118/jenwedding/Dress4_2.jpg
• I have to say I like the second dress best. The detail on the top of the bodice and the way it fits you is just gorgeous! If you keep looking, you should stay with that top and looked for a full skirt. You seem to be on the right track for combining your two favorite elements from both dresses with that last one, sorry it didn't turn out like in the picture (I hate it when that happens)
• I think you look great in both! I do agree a drop waist would be better for you in the first dress.

I have had my eye on Maggie's Jenna & thought of it as soon as I saw the first pic of you...

• Your body language in the second dress hints to me that you feel more comfortable (maybe more yourself?) in it...your head is tilted back, your shoulders are more relaxed and not tense....just my two cents though

• I agree with MBC, you look really young in the first dress...

They're both beautiful on you.

I think the last dress is more flattering. It shows your beautiful figure and you look a lot more mature. The first dress seems to swallow you in a lot and hide you. I also can imagine ithat it'd be difficult to dance in!
• you totally shine in the ballgown. It has so much more "wow" than the other dress (and I have a more fitted dress, so it's not like I'm a ballgown-only kinda gal). I say go for it ;-)
• I really like the third dress! Dress 2_1

It doesn't swallow you up like the ballgown (and I do like ballgowns but just not that one) and it defines your figure quite nicely.

Definitely go shopping some more, maybe bring some more or different people, and find the right one for you, you'll know.

GL! :-)
